Can colour affect performance? That is the question being posed by Crown Trade colour experts who are exploring the association of colour within football. To coincide with the start of the English and Scottish Premier League campaigns they have looked at the colours that have been worn by the most successful, and least successful, teams in the post-war period. In the English top flight red - sported by Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal - has been by far the most successful colour. Ironically, teams in gold came bottom of the colour league. Red is considered an aggressive colour, explaining its popularity in football. However, despite its association with success Crown Trade does not advise its use unless specifically asked to do so.

Finishes from the Sandtex Trade paint range have been used to repaint all external surfaces of 108 Regency buildings on Brunswick Estate in Hove. The company created a special colour called 'Hove Cream' for the buildings, which has been used as part of the estate's ongoing maintenance programme. For the walls of the buildings, Classic Stone Gloss was used, and Flexigloss X-Tra was applied on the woodwork as well as in black on the metail railings. Additionally, a variety of Crown Trade products were used to prepare the surfaces, including Zinc Phosphate Primer and Alkaline Resisting Primer.

Designed to resist staining and withstand repeated cleaning, Crown Trade has introduced the Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt. Suitable for high use areas, it has been developed for use in schools, offices, hospitals and leisure facilities. The product's paint film thickness is maintained after intensive cleaning. In trials, it achieved the highest rating, Class 1 of ISO 11998, which meant that less than five microns of paint thickness were lost after a painted test panel was subjected to 200 simulated cleaning cycles on a scrub testing machine.

Colours in the Sandtex range from Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings were chosen by residents of a four storey care home in Birmingham which caters for 68 people. The residents' committee was invited to select the colour scheme and chose to replace the former turquoise with Cornish Cream and Black. Products from the Sandex Trade range were used with High X-posure Masonry paint on the stonework, Flexigloss X-tra on all of the metalwork, and Fine Textured Matt applied for the render.

Available from Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings, Sandtex Trade systems have been used to restore the Isle of Man parliament building and the House of Keys, as part of a refurbishment programme. The decorators opted for the company's 365 All Weather Masonry and 365 All Weather Gloss for the external redecoration of the buildings in the town of Douglas. Suitable for cold, wet weather and with the ability to be applied in such conditions, the 365 system is also effective against salty coastal air, as in this case. It keeps the exterior cleaner by allowing dirt to run straight off, which was particularly suitable for this project due to the bright white colour used on the 'wedding cake' part of the buildings.

Providing accommodation for young people, Axiom Housing Association's Peterborough Foyer has achieved fire protection by the use of Crown Trade's Timonox flame retardant paints. The Class 4 upgrades, or warringtonfire Blueboard tested products, reinstate the highest category of flame retardancy. Properties in Derby have been applied with Akzo Nobel's Sandtex Trade FlexiGloss X-tra and Classic Stone Gloss on the exterior and Crown Trade Timonox Acrylic Eggshell on the communal areas inside. Flame retardant finishes and paints from the Crown Trade Timonox range have been specified to decorate communal areas of two nine-storey blocks of flats in a refurbishment programme in Nottingham. All surfaces were finished with the company's Timonox Acrylic Eggshell. The requirement was to use a coating system which would reinstate the original Class O rating to circulation areas and escape routes to slow the potential spread of flame in the event of a fire. As well as meeting British Fire Safety standards, the range has also been tested by Warrington fire to meet forthcoming European fire test requirements. The product was also specified due to the wide selection of colours that are offered.

Timonox flame retardant paint systems from Crown Trade helped slow the spread of flames when fire broke out on the top floor of a high rise block in Derby. Applied to the communal areas of the tower, the product prevented damage occurring even though plastic information signs curled in the heat. The range is one of only a few products to meet new European fire test standards in addition to the current set of UK Building Regulation requirements. Providing passive fire protection which creates extra time for escape, the company's Timonox Vinyl Matt was specified for the ceilings, Timonox Acrylic Eggshell for the walls and Acrylic Satin for the woodwork, which was used on the corridors and stairwells of the tower block.

An extensive refurbishment project to provide a facelift to the Edwardian His Majesty?s Theatre in Aberdeen has incorporated Crown Trade finishes from Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings. To complement the transformation, the project includes paint colours from the RIBA drawings collection which were developed from period designs. Claimed to be the first interior coatings range formulated without black, Crown Trade has introduced ?true colours?. The lack of black changes the affect that light has on the paint. Black in the formulation of the colour will absorb light, while with paint from the ?true colours? range light is reflected around the pigment, making it appear brighter and more luminous.
