Atmos Heating Systems has supplied Combinair to a sustainable housing development in Nottingham.
With a claimed efficiency of 300-400 per cent, the Combinair integrates a condensing gas combi boiler with an air source heat pump (ASHP) in one unit. The unit offers a low cost route to achieving Code Levels 3 and 4, says the firm.
Combinair draws warm air from the mechanical extract ventilation system, together with outside air. Recovering heat from the extract air, the unit pumps up to 3 kW of heat energy back into the central heating system.

Atmos Heating Systems has introduced an appendix to the SAP (standard assessment procedure) product section for boiler hot water performance, to enable SAP to recognise the high efficiency of a condensing gas boiler which combines with an air source heat pump in a single unit.
The firm says that the section only holds one product entry, the Combinair from Atmos. The firm has thus been contributing to the BRE's calculations for hot water performance for the new SAP Appendix Q.
The firm's John Thomason explains: "The new 'Hot Water Only Boiler' category within the Appendix will allow SAP assessors to use the verified higher efficiency of the Combinair."
Atmos Heating Systems says it offers the ideal choice for properties with high hot water demand with its Multi boiler.
Boasting a claimed efficiency of 90.3 per cent, the Multi combines a condensing combination boiler and an 80 litre unvented hot water storage tank. The Multi is therefore able to offer the advantages of both stored and instantaneous hot water systems. The system also provides reduced CO2 emissions.
The Multi 24/80+ is ideal for homes with more than one bathroom and has a peak output of 22 kW, with a flow rate of up to 25 litres a minute.
A "leader in low-carbon heating", Atmos has welcomed the "long-awaited" changes to the SEDBUK rating, which will mean a comparison of hot water efficiency in combi boilers.
According to the firm, the SEDBUK rating looks set to offer consumers and installers their "first chance to compare combi boilers' hot water efficiency via a simple A-G rating system".
The proposals are incorporated in SAP 2009 as part of the Building Regulations consultation, due to come into force in 2010.
John Thompson, general manager at Atmos, said: "Currently the UK SEDBUK ratings only apply to boilers' space heating performance, ignoring hot water efficiency. This makes if difficult for installers and consumers to select boilers which offer a truly low-carbon energy-saving option". The firm says that in new low-energy homes, heating demands equate to approximately half space heating and half water.
