As an addition to the Pi polyamide insulation suite from Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, the 5Pi Vertical Sliding Window has slim sightlines and can be manufactured to fit openings upwards of 500mm wide and 2800mm high.
Using Torso Balances, the window provides security with sash locks and a concealed locking mechanism, in order for the window to offer smooth operation as well as hidden locking. The sash lock includes a double keep which maintains security as well as providing night ventilation.
It can also be fitted with a lockable restrictor at 100mm increments. Both sashes can be tilted for cleaning to maintain a long term visual appearance.

Security standards for doors have been updated with the PAS 24 British Standard incorporating a test which includes a cylinder attack. The thermally efficient Comar 7Pi door has passed the new test at the BRE. As part of the revised test is the Corrigendum 1 'Enhanced performance requirements for door assemblies - Part 1: Single and double leaf, hinged external door assemblies to dwellings'. The cylinder attack method is covered under clause A11 'Security hardware and cylinder test'. Comar 7Pi uses the Pi polyamide insulation to ensure low u-values. It also meets the requirements of PAS 23 weather tests.
An extension to a house on the edge of Dartmoor features Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems profiles.
The Dartmoor veranda consists of a facetted curtain walling with opening vents and entrances. A glazed facade was achieved with Comar 2, which is a 35mm thermally efficient window wall and an alternative to curtain walling. The facetted feature was achieved with adjustable Comar 2 corner mullions with returns of 67.5˚ to 180˚. For opening vents, Comar 5Lt top-hung windows were integrated into Comar 2. Comar 5Lt is a 45mm window suite and is suitable for achieving slim sight lines.
The entrances onto the veranda, Comar 7 swing doors were hung direct onto Comar 2. All aluminium profiles were polyester powder coated to standard grey RAL. Integration of the system meant that the slim sight lines that were produced were standardised throughout the facade. These sight line all maximum daylight into the atrium.
Aluminium for a glass pavilion has been supplied by Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems.
The glazed fa?ade was achieved using Comar 6 curtain walling due to its inherent strength. The framing is capable of containing large panes of glass in slim 50mm frames.
Large sliding doors were created by using the Comar 7Pi HSD system. The profiles are extruded separately then rolled together with a 20mm polyamide strip.
It can be used to create two to four pane sliding patios, with dual colour options. Inside and outside framing can be polyester powder coated in different colours, potentially offering a variety of design opportunities.
Designed by FaulknerBrowns architects, the Xscape leisure centre in Braehead near Glasgow features 10000m? of curved and tapered Kalzip 305 clad aluminium alloy on the roof and walls of the main ski area.
In addition, the lower level retail area was changed to Kalzip 500 profiled sheets to meet the performance requirements of flexibility, durability and minimum maintenance.
Due to the ski slope housed within, the building had to be insulated against heat gain. The Kalzip sheets provide a watertight seal which when installed over the cold store construction assists in preserving the ski slope.
Aluminium for the fenestration of Oceana Boulevard, a residential development in Southampton, has been supplied by Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems.
The project contains over 700 Comar 5Pi tilt and turn windows with slim outer framing which provides thermal efficiency. It has two separately extruded profiles which are rolled together with a Pi strip to form the thermal break. All windows were polyester powder coated.
Comar 6 curtain walling spans all 12 storeys of the stairwells throughout the building's facades, incorporating bottom-hung 5Pi windows for use as smoke vents.
The slim 50mm sightlines permit an uninterrupted views over the sea. Comar 7Pi polyamide insulated doors were incorporated into balconies.

Compass Glass installed Comar 6 curtain walling and Comar 7 doors over a four week period. Comar 6 is a 50mm thermally efficient system designed to integrate panels, glass of different widths, opening vents and doors. In the terminal, it spans the first and second floors incorporating 3m high panes of 6mm toughened glass. Rows of smaller etched glass panes create a feature. The glazing also has integrated Comar 7 curved auto sliding doors with polyester powder coating to standard Grey RAL colour.
Windows from Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems have exceeded the requirements of the BS 6375 Part 1:1989 Classification for Weather Tightness. The test sequence on the company's 5 Pi Reversible Pivot Window determined tightness in respect to air permeability, water penetration and wind resistance. It achieved air permeability of 4.54 (m?/hr/linear m) at air pressures of 600 Pa, well below the permissible level of 6.65.
Carried out by BRE test house, Comar Architectural Aluminium System's 5Pi Tilt and Turn window passed enhanced security British Standard: BS 7950.
The internally beaded, 24mm double glazed unit was involved in a test that consisted of manipulation, manual check, glazing removal and mechanical load tests. The window's locking system remained impervious to attacks from steel wires, knives, chisels and screw drivers.
In glazing removal tests, the same set of implements was used with similar end results. For the mechanical test, a perpendicular-to-plane load of 2.0kN was applied to each corner of the glazing.
Thermal performance is also achieved with a 20mm polyamide strip rolled-in between two extruded profiles.
Specifiers can now incorporate windows into a fa?e without the need for additional flashings with Comar 5 Pi Cladding adaptors. The external frame of the windows incorporates the cladding adaptor, which mimics the edge profile of Kingspan or Euro-panel cladding. The adaptor utilises Comar Pi technology, with low u-values and dual colour options achieved.
Aluminium profiles from Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems have been supplied for the largest educational project Lancashire County Council has undertaken - new build Ormskirk School. Some 433 Comar 5P .i. top-hung windows were installed direct into brick reveals and, to provide opening vents to the curtain wall, were also integrated directly into Comar 6 curtain walling. Comar 5P .i. is a polyamide insulated system which is designed to provide thermal efficiency and offers a dual colour option. In this application the dual colour option was taken and the profiles were polyester powder coated to a blue colour on the outside and a red colour on the inside.
Two new office blocks in Plymouth for the Rok Group have been completed with windows and curtain walling from Comar. The company's 45mm windows with locking handles, trickle vents, restrictors and extended cills were installed, as well as Comar 6 curtain walling and Comar 7 heavy duty doors.
To create light and interest through the building, Comar glazed fa?ades have been located at the stairwells and main entrance of the new build Prince Charles hospital in Merthr Tydfil. Comar 6 curtain walling was used, powder coated to complement the brick and cladded areas of the building, which provided the flexibility to clad both panels and glass into the fa?ade. Part of an eye catching construction, the entrance to The Hexagon, an assembly hall at Terethers School in Newquay, has been created using Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems? curtain walling and doors. The door entrance has been designed so that its both shaped on plan and elevation, create a focal point for The Hexagon. All sight lines are angled and shaped including the glazing; even the door handles were specially shaped for the installation. Comar 6 curtain walling was selected with high span mullions to create the long lines of the installation, while transoms helped create the angled horizontal lines. The curtain walling has specially extruded profiles so that Comar 7 doors can integrate directly into the curtain wall without the need for additional coupling profiles. A further advantage was the ability of Comar 6 to incorporate transoms closer to ensure the weathering of the project.
To comply with the low energy directive, the head office of Raglan Housing Association, based in Bournemouth, has been refurbished using Comar 5P.i. windows. The 5P.i. windows are designed to reduce heat loss through a thermal break, ensuring that buildings get warmer faster and colder slower. In this application vertical pivot windows coupled to a bottom fixed light were installed. They were polyester powder coated in brown RAL colour and encased directly into stone reveals.
Offering a larger angle of reduced maintenance, standard profile, thermal break aluminium windows, Comar 5 window systems from The Parkside Group feature options of fixed lights, reversible pivot, projected-out casements, tilt-turn and reversible top swing. All are available with single or double glazing and in a choice of colour finishes.
Developed as a cost-effective alternative to curtain walling, Comar offers Comar 2. The thermal break system is designed for durability and is internally glazed for security and speed of installation, with an external glazing override where internal obstacles make it necessary. Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems has announced that its latest system, Comar 5P.I top-hung casement window, meets the enhanced security requirements of Clause 7 as prescribed by BS 7950:1999.
The BS 7950 security test, conducted at BRE, consisted of manipulation, manual check, glazing removal and mechanical load sequences.
The company says the manipulation and manual checks were designed to unfasten or disengage the window's locking system. In the manipulation test, implements such as steel wires, paint scrapers, craft knives, joiners bolsters, wood chisels and screwdrivers were used.
In the manual check test, nail bars and flat bladed screwdrivers were used to try and break through hinges, locking and fixing points.
The Comar 5P.I.top hung remained impervious to these attacks.
