Cooper Lighting and Security Minimise battery upkeepCentral battery systems from Cooper Lighting and Security have been fitted to the University of Leeds to reduce maintenance costs in the running of emergency lighting. It was decided to use several Menvier CeaGuard CG48 central battery units with slave luminaries. Alan Hansell, the university's technical officer, said: 'With a central battery system battery life tends to be longer, sometimes 10 years or more, and when they do eventually need replacing, it's a quick job carried out at just one location.'

Cooper Lighting and Security Light now shed on agressive conditions The new Crompton Lighting Tufflite range of linear fluorescent luminaires from Cooper Lighting and Security has been designed for use in applications where they may be subjected to wet or dusty conditions or even corrosive chemicals. There are two models in the range - Tufflite TFW and Tufflite TFC - and both feature a robust construction with a deep poured gasket seal for IP65 protection against dust and water ingress. The TFW is a general purpose, weatherproof luminaire with a flame retardant polycarbonate body, prismatic diffuser and clips. The vandal-resistant design makes it suitable for public areas such as swimming pools and car parks, as well as industrial applications. The polycarbonate-free TFC is said to be ideal for use where resistance to corrosive chemicals is required. Its body is made from glass-reinforced polyester, the diffuser from stippled acrylic, and stainless-steel clips are supplied. Both luminaires are available in eight different sizes to accommodate a variety of T8 or T5 lamps in either single or twin configurations, and the range also includes integral emergency versions.

The Menvier Evolved range of LED products is fully compliant with the performance requirements of EN 1838 and provides maintained operation with a three hour duration. It can be specified as a self-contained unit or as a slave unit for use with static inverters. Operation is ensured by a 60,000 hour LED light source, which on the self-contained version is automatically monitored by an integral self-test facility. This facility uses light-measuring technology to verify the output of the individual LEDs during testing. Available in a choice of white or silver colour finishes, the exit sign has a screwless 'snap-together' design with a self-locking, clip-in legend panel for ease of assembly.

Cooper Lighting and Security Lighting up the teachingFluorescent luminaires from Cooper Lighting and Security have been supplied to the new Matthew Boulton College building in Birmingham. A supply of nearly 1500 of the company's Crompton Lighting range of luminaries have been installed in the lecture rooms, laboratories, studies, and walkways of the purpose-built premises. Using over 1000 Moduspec semi-recessed fluorescent luminaires, the company achieved the requisite lighting level of 400 lux with a uniformity of 0.8 throughout all of the building's lecture rooms. In addition, the company supplied 300 of the new Solstar recessed fluorescent downlights with blue halo glass for the walkways, with Moduwall and Moduseal recessed fluorescent luminaires for restaurant and laboratory areas.

Detection on Earth

Cooper Lighting and Security Detection on EarthFire detection and emergency lighting systems from Cooper Lighting and Security are protecting the recently constructed Earth Sciences building at Durham University. The main part of the building is protected by a Menvier four loop analogue addressable fire detection system linked to more than 250 smoke detectors, call points and sounders. In addition, the company also supplied a Vesda early-warning smoke detection system for the building's computer room. The high sensitivity Vesda system is connected to a remote display some 200m away in the university's security lodge. Over 200 Menvier stand-alone emergency luminaires were installed throughout the building. This including Eurolite flush-mounted luminaires and Safe Edge exit signs, with Atlantic Plus IP65-rated luminaires chosen for exterior applications.

Speedy fixing for luminaire wiring

Cooper Lighting and Security Speedy fixing for luminaire wiringOffering a simple method of speeding up the installation process as well as facilitating maintenance and any future reconfiguration, Cooper Lighting and Security has introduced a fast-fit luminaire wiring system. Known as the Connect Wiring System, the system uses GST four pole self-locking connectors which have a maximum current rating of 16A and can be plugged in or unplugged under load. Any part in the company?s Crompton Lighting range of modular recessed fluorescent luminaires can be specified with a panel mounted socket to make it compatible with the Connect Wiring System. Luminaries are linked together using a Connect Wiring System prefabricated lead kit, which consists of a T-connector and a 3m or 5mlow smoke zero halogen cable.
