Corus's groundbreaking Colorcoat gets even better

Corus Building Systems (UK) Corus's groundbreaking Colorcoat gets even betterCorus is proud to launch Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra pre-finished steel. The new product offers an exciting new colour range and dramatically improved colour and gloss performance, all supported by a significantly extended Confidex Guarantee of 40 years. Combining outstanding performance and unrivalled reliability with impressive sustainability credentials, Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra is the result of sustained evolution and revolutionary coating technology. The choice of pre-finished steel product is fundamental to both the visual appearance and long-term performance of the building envelope. Colour availability, colour retention and durability over time, as well as the physical emboss are important factors when considering the aesthetic aspects of a specification. With over 40 years experience, Corus has an excellent understanding of how different colours perform and what is achievable through the many technical advances we have made. Using this knowledge, Corus has worked with a group of architects and colour specialists to consider our colour palette from the designer’s perspective. This group expressed a desire for more colours that connect with the natural environment and which can work effectively in a range of different contexts. The colours that resonated most were natural and subtle tones in blues, greens and greys. These work well individually and extend the potential for blending and toning colours on a building.

Product of the month

Corus Building Systems (UK) Product of the monthLaunched at Futurebuild, Hi-Point - a new off site roofing system from Corus - is Building Products' Product of the Month for April. Offering a complete roof solution, the system is suited to fast-track projects where limited time and space requires construction to take place off-site. The roof is lighter in weight than a timber and tile structure, and is not subject to warping or shrinkage. It is also claimed to reduce the fire risk in the finished building. Complete Hi-Point roofs can be pre-assembled at a dedicated site in Haydock then transported to site. Alternatively, the components can be delivered as a kit of factory-manufactured parts that are ready for assembly and installation. In one of its first applications - a multi-storey luxury apartment block in Liverpool - the use of the Hi-Point system cut installation time to two days. Due to the location of the project in the heart of the city centre and the height of the block, speed of installation and increased safety were key considerations. The 1.5? pitched Hi-Point gull wing roof, which sits 94m above the ground, was considered an appropriate solution. The 22 modules were lifted and bolted into position in two days, allowing a reduction in the installation project and overall site time.

Sound structure for sports

Corus Building Systems (UK) Sound structure for sportsIndoor sports facilities at the Blessed George Napier Catholic Secondary School in Banbury have had an acoustic solution from Corus Panels and Profiles installed. Due to the internal volume of the building, regulations required for it to be air tight and provide a high degree of sound reduction through the walls. The roof construction used 4500m? of the company's Colourcoat HPS 200 pre-finished steel in a three layer build-up consisting of R32/1000 roof panels, thermal insulation, plain lining panels, acoustic insulation and perforated lining panels. It was complemented by 950m? of wall cladding using Trisomet panels - a trapezoidal composite panel. Joints were sealed with tape to stop air passage through the sheets.

Clean sweep for spices

Corus Building Systems (UK) Clean sweep for spicesTo meet the requirements for a long, sweeping, continuous roof, 13,000m2 of low maintenace Kalzip 65/400 in 200m sheets - made by Corus - were used on the new spice and pulses packaging and storage factory for Natco Foods in Buckingham. Roll-formed on site and curved to a radius of up to 6m, the extra long Kalzip standing seam sheets provided the uninterrupted finish from ridge to eaves demanded by the designers. Originally, the Kalzip system was specified in natural stucco embossed aluminium, but planners felt a less shiny finish would be more in keeping with the other buildings on the Swan Business Park so the specification was changed to powder coated PVdF finish in RAL 7037 (dusty grey). Kalzip was also used to clad the factory's rear elevation, giving an overall installation of some 15,000m2 for the project.

Roofing under the microscope at research HQ

Corus Building Systems (UK) Roofing under the microscope at research HQClose to Cambridge, the Babraham Research Campus has, in its latest phase of development, fitted its Minerva building with a full Kalzip specification to provide a high performance roof and meet strict planning criteria. Stucco embossed Kalzip 65/400 smooth curved sheets were used for the 1200m2 wave form roof. Providing an eye-catching canopy over the entrance, the roof curves in one direction to a radius of 16.5m and then back again to a radius of 25m. The roof disguises the facility?s plant equipment and softens the impact of the building. This was essential to meet planning criteria for the facility, which is located close to a listed building. The specification achieves a uvalue of 0.25W/m2K. It consists of a liner sheet, a vapour control layer, which was taped and sealed to achieve the air sealing standard for external walls, a layer of insulation and the Kalzip sheets.

Corus Building Systems (UK) With its roof top ?scribble? sculpture as well as 1800m² of Kalzip standing seam cladding and a glazed northern elevation, the Ben Pimlott Building at the University of London?s Goldsmiths College has become a local landmark in the New Cross district of south-east London. The distinctive seven storey building features Kalzip 300 profile on three elevations o provide an attractive rainscreen fa?ade with a reflective appearance. It was specified as an alternative to profiled sheets and because it could accommodate the building?s tiny windows that were integrated to shield all seven floors from sunlight. Kalzip also provided a suitable backdrop for the wall mounted metal structures which were clamped to the fa?ade. For consistency in appearance, the corners of the building and window openings featured welded Kalzip flashings.
