A complex arrangement of stone cladding panels at the new Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art has been secured by Halfen's SUK stone fixing system. In total some 1000m of the system was used. Approximately half was used to secure open-jointed Sierra White limestone cladding to internal areas, including the lower and upper wall of the main staircase concourse, which in part comprised a suspended hanging wall. The panels are in a jigsaw pattern where the length, thickness, height and finish of individual stones vary. Once each panel was individually referenced the SUK system provided the tolerances required. The other half was used to secure Sierra White limestone external rainscreen cladding with 3-5mm open joists. This was then fixed to the primary steel and Metsec, with insulation bats and a breather membrane.

Said to enable the transfer of high shear loads, particularly between suspended floor slabs where movement joints are required to isolate independent structures, the new Halfen CRET eliminates the need for additional structural supports such as columns. The system utilises a "novel design of vertical rods and support box to maximum area of concrete work in shear" says the manufacturer, meaning only a single horizontal free-movement dowel is needed to span the joint.

Adjustable connections to concrete structures using self-tapping screws is provided by Halfen HTU self-anchoring channels. Cast into the concrete, the channel is anchored due to its dovetail shape. It provides a connection area on the surface of the concrete. The channel's polystyrene infill provides a 25mm thick pocket for penetration of the screw. Channels are manufactured in pre-galvanised steel in profile sections of 40/25, 60/25 and 80/25.

Reinforced concrete balconies installed using Halfen's HIT insulated balcony connection systems have been applied at a mixed use building on Old Kent Road. With the HIT system, the reinforcement passes through a continuous 80mm thickness of polystyrene insulation, allowing structural connections to be made between external concrete balconies and internal floor slabs without interrupting the continuous thermal insulation of the external wall.

Heavy duty, close-to-edge fixings in the thin metal decks of the new Civil Justice Centre in Manchester have been solved by the use of Halfen's 'Ski' cast-in channel assemblies. A double-skin cladding has been utilised, comprising of an inner leaf of unitised system cladding and an outer leaf of glass curtain walling. The assemblies comprise of pairs of 350mm long sections of channel - in this case HTA 52/34 hot-rolled channel - joined by spreader straps.

Samba gold granite cladding panels by means of Halfen's SUK system have been secured around the lift shafts at the centre of the terminal building at the new Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, Sheffield. The building was designed by architects Leach Rhodes Walker and built by Bovis Lend Lease. Installation of the 40mm thick natural stone cladding was done by Stone Cladding International, the variously sized panels being pre-cut and pre-slotted so that no site work was required on the stone. Plates welded to steelwork provided the structural fixing of the SUK system, which provided the adjustment required to ensure panels were aligned.

One of the latest examples of Halfen's Kwikastrip reinforcement continuity system is on a project for Roger Bullivant in Burton-on-Trent. They were tasked with producing 60 precast sandwich panels, each 5m long, for the new Aldi store in Leyland. Faced with a difficult connection, the company provided 1.2m abutting casings, each housing 46 T10 reinforcing bars at irregular centres.

Chapelfield Shopping Centre in Norwich has a stone clad entrance achieved using Halfen's SUK system, which provided the flexibility required to fix back to a variable primary structure consisting of Holorib decking, steel members, and blockwork. The project was designed by BDP with Mouchel as structural engineers and Bovis Lend Lease as developers. The system reduced the risk of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome by minimising the amount of drilling into concrete. Marking out the position of - and installing the channels of - the SUK system involved detail work including welding channels onto the steel frame.

Utilised to secure the Spanish Calizi Capri limestone cladding on Sunlight Project's development in Tower Bridge Road, London, Halfen has provided a UKB stone support system. The product achieves sharp and straight joint lines with minimum difficulty despite frequent breaks in the wall.

Engineer Arup has utilised Halfen to connect steel balconies back to floor slabs on a residential development in Cardiff. The company provided its HBM coupler with longer length heads to ensure penetration without the risk of 'bottoming'. These were welded together in sets of four to save setting out time. L-bars were used to link the couplers in the reinforcement cage.

Adjustable curtain wall brackets from Halfen are designed to provide safe and accurate fixing of curtain wall mullions. Developed for top of the slab connection, when the brackets are used with the company's channel they give adjustment in three directions to enable precise location of mullions.

Supporting the ?shrink-wrapped? roof that envelopes The Sage Gateshead is Halfen?s Detan tension rod system which is being used as a bracing to the steel structure. The building provides accommodation for three auditoria and the Regional Music School. Each auditorium was conceived as a separate enclosure but the windswept nature of the site prompted the architects to provide a concourse to link them, sheltered by a broad roof. The 720 tonne roof was installed using numerous Detan tension rods.
