A new ultra-lightweight semi precast concrete flooring system from Hanson Building Products will make its debut at next month's Futurebuild exhibition. Making use of recycled plastic spherical hollow formers to create a two-way void, Cobiadeck facilitates a true biaxial flat slab design with no beams according to the company. Hanson says the products is up to 35% lighter than traditional in-situslab construction, adding that it also offers as much as 40% savings in construction time. Cobiadeck is particularly useful for application where the requirement is to achieve lightweight thin decks without the need for beam downstands as well as where wide column spacing is needed. Aimed at easing the design pressure on architects and specifiers, Red Bank, part of Hanson Building Products, now offers a flue component scheduling service. Under the scheme, architects submit elevations and plans for the property to Red Bank's technical service department with an indication of where the fireplaces and chimneys are to be located. The technical team will then provide information on all components and systems required. With this offering, the company now says it can advise on the correct specification to meet environmental legislative requirements.

Approved Document L has led to chimneys and flues from companies such as Red Bank providing solutions to combat carbon emissions. The Standard Assessment Procedure calculation adopts electric as the default form of secondary heating, which is a carbon intensive energy source. Air seepage tests carried out in compliance with amendments to Approved Document L have been achieved in four homes at Church Gresley by using Thermalite aircrete blocks from Hanson. These products have resistance to air leakage and are suitable for use in composite constructions incorporating secondary insulation. Thermal performance satisfies Building Regulation requirements too.

This urban village has been designed to provide a range of facilities including supermarkets, restaurants, day care facilities and retail units, as well as residential accommodation. The facade of the building is a mixture of the company's bricks, white render and large windows, which are designed to give balance and proportion to the elevations and provide light and a sense of space in the interiors. An extension to the Butterfly collection of natural clay bricks, Hanson Building Products has introduced a new clay block range.
