COMPANY PROFILE Ibstock takes its name from the original base in the village of Ibstock in Leicestershire, where the Company headquarters is still situated. Brickmaking has taken place on the site as far back as 1830. In 1899, the Company was registered as Ibstock Collieries Ltd. Its principal activity was coal mining as well as quarrying clay for the manufacture of bricks and pavers. During the next 30 years, the trading emphasis changed from coal to manufacture of brick from its original Leicestershire base. In 1963, following the acquisition of Himley Brick Company Ltd, near Wolverhampton, Ibstock shares were offered to the public for the first time. There then followed a major expansion programme in the UK designed to extend the products and services by the Company more widely throughout the country. In 1970, The Ibstock Brick and Tile Company Ltd combined with Johnsen, Jorgensen & Wettre Ltd, whose business was the sale of wood pulp and newsprint in the UK and Western Europe, to form a new parent company, Ibstock Johnsen Ltd (which would become Ibstock plc). The increased resources of the new group were used to continue the programme of expansion of brick making facilities and services. During this time Ibstock Building Products Ltd was the first brick manufacturer to offer specialist brickwork design advice, through its Brickwork Design Centre in major cities and a national team of Design Advisors. In 1990 Ibstock Building Products acquired two new companies; Hathernware Ltd and Ceba Ltd. Hathernware manufactured terracotta and architectural faience and Ceba manufacture architectural wet cast stone. Through continued expansion during the 1990s another three stone factories were added. At the beginning of its Centennial year, 1999, Ibstock joined the CRH Group. The CRH Group has its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, click here to go to their website. In 1999, the stone factories were transferred to Forticrete, a sister company in CRH and the Ibstock Group was formed of Ibstock Brick Ltd and Forticrete Ltd. In 2003, the Company changed to Ibstock – Innovators in Clay – reflecting the company’s changing emphasis on business excellence through innovation and another chapter in Ibstock’s history started. Ibstock Ltd now has 24 brick and paver plants with a total annual capacity in excess of 900 million bricks. The Company employs a total of 1960 people across the UK and has the backing of one of the world’s largest building materials companies. As market leader in the UK, Ibstock is well-placed in the market and continuous investment in manufacturing equipment and people will ensure that it will prosper for many years to come.

Institution that looks 'non institutional' - Ibstock Brick Ltd |
On a triangular site of the former Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, the Swanswell Point Mental Health Resource Centre uses a combination of materials from Ibstock Brick and design to create a 'non-institutional' appearance on the interior and exterior.
The company's Atlas Smooth Blue Brick is contrasted with panelling on the main elevations and the entrance features a curved facade of curtain walling which extends into the point of the wedge.
Originally the consultants' car park, the site was developed with support from the local planning authority and the Urban Regeneration Company as a benchmark for future regeneration in the area.
Other features of the three-storey building include its use of pitched northern lights and large glazed panels to maximise natural light and ventilation. The project was built under the NHS ProCure 21 initiative.

Creating the right atmosphere - Ibstock Brick Ltd |
After outgrowing its South London base, Neal's Yard Remedies decided to move to Dorset, allowing it to be closer to its source of ingredients.
Its new building reflects the company's philosophy, incorporating a number of sustainable features, uncluding a wall of unfired Cattybrook clay bricks from Ibstock.
The bricks are incorporated into the internal wall of the refectory, and are finished with a clay plaster. Their thermal mass dampens temperature fluctuations in the refectory and also help regulate indoor air quality by absorbing and releasing moisture.
Following this application, Ibstock is looking for further opportunities for dried clay blocks as part of a sustainable approach.

Trusting in clay and brick - Ibstock Brick Ltd |
As well as achieving sustainability, the National Trust's new headquarters is sympathetic to Brunel's original engineering workshops - where the offices are based - by utilising products from Ibstock's Blue Fireborn Clay Blocks and Staffordshire Slate Blue Brindle Rustic brick ranges.
The choice of brick colours matches the polychromatic appearance of the adjacent Victorian buildings. The Blue Brindle had been discontinued but the company made them by special request. Blue pigmented lime mortar was used to minimise cement usage and facilitate recycling. They were utilised on the north-west and north-east elevations in a stack bond, including on the brick-work cantilevers used as shading fins. The Fireborn Blocks were installed in landscaping around the buildings.

Road to yellow bricks - Ibstock Brick Ltd |
Combining private apartments with offices, a restaurant and basement parking, a development in Battersea has specified Ibstock's Laybrook Sevenoaks Yellow Multi to resemble London yellow stock bricks and Natural Red Fireborn clay blocks.
The plan comprises two three storey blocks at either end, housing the commercial units. At the roofline, the floors recede to create balconies surmounted by a pitched, oversailing roof that replicates a ship's superstructure.
The company also provided dogleg corner bricks and Fireborn blocks. The latter was an economical substitute for rainscreen cladding, as it could be laid quickly.

Bespoke Roman brick - Ibstock Brick Ltd |
Among the many design features that helped Paternoster House in the City of London win the BDA Brick Award for 2004 for Best Commercial Building is the use of Ibstock's Swanage brick in a purpose made size and blend of colours. The Swanage brick was selected because it resembled the original Roman bricks found extensively in the foundations of the buildings around this area. Ibstock also imitated the Roman dimensions of the originals, producing a brick that is 46mm high. This brick was combined with a 15mm mortar jointing and an unusual bond patter to create a distinctive texture to the main elevations.
