The Parapro waterproofing system is claimed to be the next generation of cold-applied liquid roofing technology, incorporating a polyester reinforcing fleece between two layers of liquid polyurethane-based coating. This can be applied 'wet on wet', eliminating the need for drying time between coats and thus significantly reducing time on site. Parapro offers rapid, seamless waterproofing for roofs, balconies and terraces without the application of heat. It comprises a base coat of polyurethane liquid onto which is immediately applied the reinforcing mat. The 'wet on wet' process is then completed with the top coat of Parapro liquid. Because it is applied cold using rollers, brushes or squeegees, use of the system may help to reduce insurance costs. Demarcated walkways in a variety of colours and with anti-skid granules can also be created.

The building membrane specialist Icopal has taken honours at this year's Reinforced Bitumen Membrane (RBM) awards organised by the Flat Roofing Alliance. Icopal's Profiles Pyrobar waterproofing system scooped the Product Excellence Award. An adjustable support system for paved and raised deck applications has been launched by Icopal. The Roofgard paving support system provides a cost-effective means of creating a fully-supported and stable raised paved area, terrace, walkway or balcony that enables specifiers to make use of a new-build or refurbished building without damaging any waterproof membrane. It comprises a threaded upper supporting head for fine adjustment and paver levelling which is interchangable with three bases and extension collars to give the full play of height. Cross-directional fins on the supporting head ensure equal spacing of slabs or tiles and drainage of the pedestrian area.

Providing a waterrproof system that is designed for refurbished or new flat roofs, Anderson Monarflex has launched the Safeseal product. The self-adhesive system is suitable for a range of flat roof applications, including all types of domestic building extensions, garages, porches, and dormers. It comprises two self-adhesive layers for waterproofing ? an underlay with SBS bitumen on the underside and a polyethylene film on top, and a capsheet with SBS bitumen and decorative slate granules on top to provide UV protection.

Aimed at the party floor market and said to slash installation times, a new lightweight acoustic system for new-build and refurbished application has been launched by Monarfloor Acoustic Systems, a subsidiary of Icopal. The Monarfloor Tranquilt under screed system is designed to be laid as carpet, 'a major consideration for specifiers and contractors looking to fill the gap left by the suspension of E-FC3,' the company said. Icopal has tasked its technical sales team to train installers in the installation of the floor. Training takes place on-site. The system is 10mm thick supplied in a 1.5m x 20m roll making it easy to store, transport and carry. It is loose laid over a structural concrete subfloor. Once finished its 'dynamic stiffness' is said to prevent collapse under the weight of overlaid screed.

Unlike existing support systems, the Roofguard solution does not penetrate the roof membrane, so waterproofing is not compromised. The system is being installed to offer a cost-effectiveness and high performance. It features a sand finish which gives adhesion to mortar and can be installed in different temperatures and weather conditions. A bitumen polymer Damp Proof Course with a polyester base, it has been independently certified by the British Board of Agrement. The DPC, which is easy to shape and form around detailing work, is being installed using the company's double sided Xtraload Jointing Tape.

Over 2000m? of Anderson Monarflex flat roofing material has been supplied for a refurbishment project at Sydenham Primary School in Leamington Spa. A tapered insulation scheme incorporating Thermazone PIR to increase the roof fall and direct rainwater to the new gutter system, consequently solving the drainage problems. The scheme involved the redirection of the school's drainage system from the existing internal outlets to an external drainage system with the installation of the tapered insulation to new falls. Work also included waterproofing with the company's High Performance Profiles torch applied roofing system and installing Roofguard cowled telescopic vents.

Heeding its own advice, the Fire Service has installed a new flameproof roofing system from Icopal at Smethwick Fire Station in the West Midlands. Two flat roofing areas, one over the appliance area and one over accommodation blocks, were leaking and ponding, affecting the integrity of the metal roof decks. Roofing contractor Brindley Asphalt stripped the roof back to the decks and installed a complete re-roofing package using Icopal's Firesmart system. Firesmart flame-free system combines self adhesive technology with hot air-application to provide fire-resistance.

Manchester's modular MOHO apartment development in Castlefield now features an environmentally friendly green roof from Icopal. In keeping with the development's forward thinking philosophy, a ground level, courtyard style green roof/garden scheme was developed to cover storage buildings and an underground car park. The 400m? surface area was modified to contain a 2m deep tree pit, which was waterproofed and tanked. A sedum roof was created in the main stair well at the centre of the courtyard.

Some 5,000m² of Icopal Sure-weld TPO has been used to refurbish the roof of the Scottish Widows headquarters in Edinburgh. The completed system was specified to replicate the original roof appearance whilst providing a tough, long lasting roof finish. Sure-Weld is formulated for long term exposure without the use of either polymeric or liquid plasticisers. The 1.2mm thick water-resistant membrane has good heat welding capabilities and the increased sheet widths produce cost savings in terms of reduced installation periods, the company claims. As the project was located in central Edinburgh care had to be taken to select the appropriate roof type, colour and finish. The chosen system had to replicate the original roof finish so a Sure weld special raised seam extrusion was hot air welded over the membrane at exactly 450mm centres.

FireSmart Therma Screed from Anderson Monarflex is a tapered, non-combustible insulation/ screed which, the company says, will last the lifetime of the building. The product is an lightweight insulating concrete that encapsulates the insulation providing a surface on which to lay waterproof membrane whilst at the same time providing protection for the vulnerable insulation from direct flame. One of the systems main advantages is that it uses stepped insulation boards dispelling the need for conventional cut to falls tapered boards, providing positive roof drainage.

A development of the existing Total Torch system, the new system ensures all combustible surfaces are protected from naked flames. This allows a greater choice of insulation boards including PUR/PIR or EPS. Having replaced the high level windows on both sides of the main body of the Church of St. John Vianney in Dublin, further problems of water penetration arose with the roof areas. blistering due to long term moisture ingress Firesmart Anderson Profiles from Icopal was applied to the 1,000m² roof. The project consisted of four separate roof areas. After priming the existing asphalt, the Firesmart roofing system was torch applied. The build up consisted of Profiles Vapour Vent XL, Thermazone PIR 80mm insulation, Profiles Vent XL intermediate layer and Firesmart Profiles XL mineral cap sheet.

According to the company, the correct installation of the system has ensured comfortable compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document E. The system does not use any mechanical fixings and is installed over the existing floorboards by simply gluing the tonge and groove joints. Sound insulation is provided via a layer of LRAC foam bonded to 18mm V313 P5 moisture-resistant chipboard.
