A recent project to transform a 57,000m? car park at Birmingham's NEC was completed with some of the fastest ever installation rates in the UK according to Interpave, the industry and product association.
Efficiency on the 12-week project was achieved by two different contractors working simultaneously and using four block paving machines. Additionally, a hydraulically-operated clamping system was used to lift a complete 'cluster' of blocks already configured in the required laying pattern.
Helping to speed up the laying preparation, various types of mechanised screeding equipment was used, including an asphalt paver machine with sonic sensors to control the layinbg course thickness.
The latest issue of the 16-page Pave It magazine is now available from Interpave. Published twice yearly the title is free of charge to anyone involved in urban design, landscaping, civil engineering and any form of paving.
The glossy issue, from the Precast Concrete Paving and Kerb Association, focuses on permeable pavement technology and other paving solutions for the sustainable management of rainwater runoff. It offers coverage on the latest design guidance, drainage software and planning policy requirements as well as looking at the latest research in cost, comparing different paving materials and drainage regimes in various applications and ground conditions.
The ability to meet 'just in time' demands with the use of a concrete block laying machine proves a decisive factor in the specification of blocks for high profile work, claims Interpave.
At the aircraft 'Parking Pan' at Newquay Cornwall International Airport a 3,500m area of block paving was laid in ten days using machine-installed concrete block paving techniques. Fast, efficient mechanised block laying means earlier completion and less operational down-time of the paved area ? a great consideration at this increasingly busy airport.
