Students get Falzinc roof - Kalzip |
A doughnut shaped Falzinc roof from Kalzip is giving pupils at a new £4.3 million school an inspired taste for the three Rs. The circular roof at Ysgol Maes y Coed in West Glamorgan, a special needs school for students with learning difficulties, contains some 1,700 m² of 0.7 mm Falzinc raised seam roofing which covers classrooms and encloses a central sensory playground. Falzinc uses a patented Pegal process to encase the aluminium core of the raised seam with a pre-weathered zinc layer that has a lower weather erosion rate than zinc.

Kalzip helps to educate over F word use - Kalzip |
When Carillion and partner HLM Architects were looking for materials for 13 new build primary schools in Barnsley they knew they had to be robust, low maintenance and sustainable. At King's Oak, Kalzip's Falzinc raised seam roofing met all the criteria.
Falzinc uses a patented Pegal process to encase the aluminium core of the raised seam with a pre-weathered zinc layer that has a lower weather erosion rate than zinc and is long living due to the saline resistant substrate.
The weathering treatment gives the zinc surface a mid grey shading - the appearance of approximately three-year old natural zinc.
At King's Oak the sheets were fixed with associated flashings and fascias as well as gutters to prevent run off from cedar boarding above roof levels affecting the zinc.
Because cedar board rain run-off attacks the surface of zinc care was needed throughout construction and secret gutters were built to prevent future damage.

The standing seam for new head quarters - Kalzip |
Kalzip has provided the standing seam for a new 'highly energy efficient' headquarters for social housing provider mhs homes.
The company was also on hand to provide technical support to deliver the challenging design of the monopitch shell roof which arcs over to become an external wall, which itself features a series of varying radii and window modules the same width as the Kalzip sheets.
The designer, James Glapin of Hazle McCormack Young LLP, said: 'The Kalzip roof forms one of three critical elements of the design and is deliberately articulated from the other façade materials by the virtue of its profile and shape.
The new structure also uses less than a quarter of the energy of a similar sized air-conditioned building.

Façade is the whole solution - Kalzip |
The perforated range of façades from Kalzip has been extended to include two new shapes.
Originally launched with circular perforations, the range now incorporates façades with elliptical and cruciform perforations,
The façades can be used as lightweight solution to shading a building from the sun, and can also protect from wind damage. The aluminium itself is inherently resistant to corrosion and can stand up to the climate in coastal areas.
Available in four standing seam profiles, the façades can be concave or convex curved, and can be purchased in stucco embossing, patina or a colour coat finish.

RAF zip it up - Kalzip |
Kalzip's 'consistently high quality technical advice' and product 'flexibility' have helped Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects stun visitors to the world's first permanent exhibition on cold war aviation and win a RIBA Award 2007 in the process.
The £11 million National Cold War Exhibition in Shropshire uses 10,000m² of Kalzip's aluminium standing seam system to clad the curvilinear roof and sections of the elevations.
The building comprises two triangular volumes that rise to 30 metres, creating a 130 metre-long fault line along their adjoining edges. These two opposing volumes provide a physical representation of the two forces locked in the cold war. The triangular volumes gracefully twist along their length, tempering the huge volume of the building.
The roof system stucco embossed 65/400 standing seam on a structural metal deck - had to follow the ever changing pitch of the structural steel members.

Farnborough Airport Redevelopment - Kalzip |
The third stage of the redevelopment of Farnborough Airport is now complete with the new terminal building equipped with a modern Kalzip aluminium standing seam roof.
Not only a milestone in modern aviation design, the three storey 4000m2 building facility serves a practical function and will serve as the new operational and administrative centre for the airport, whilst also providing meeting facilities for business travellers. Due to the nature of the design, it was important that the roof was as impressive as the elevations that can be viewed at ground level.
For the asymmetrical ?wing-like? roof the terminal building, over 1800m2 of Kalzip 65/400 aluminium has been installed. Using the company?s tapering capabilities, the curves of the radial rooflights and monopitch roof were accentuated to provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
As well as being specified across all three of the new buildings - the terminal, the hanger and the control tower - for its flexibility in achieving unity between the contrasting designs of the buildings, Kalzip was also supplied for its durability and weathering properties, which ensured that the roof structures will not diminish over time.

A wave of interchange - Kalzip |
For the wave-form roof of Liverpool South Parkway Interchange, Kalzip's aluminium sheets were specified for their versatility.
Over 200 different types of shaped and tapered Kalzip sheets were installed, some of which bend in three different directions. Sheets varied in size and radii over the area of the 3000m roof. Each tailored sheet was individually designed using three-dimensional computer-aided-design technology prior to manufacture.
As the company's aluminium can be recycled without losing its inherent qualities, over 30% of the sheets specified were made from recycled aluminium.
In addition to the roof of the Interchange, sheets were also installed on the canopy that links the building to the nearby platform. This led to track side training to complete the work safely and efficiently in a live rail environment.

Style statement at the Staiths - Kalzip |
With the intention of rejuvenating the current style of new residential properties, George Wimpey North and architects ID Partnership have teamed up with fashion designers Wayne and Geraldine Hemmingway for a residential development in Gateshead.
The Staiths South Bank development features some 3,000m? of Kalzip aluminium standing seam roofing. It was selected for its modern appearance and used for both shallow pitch and roofs with saw tooth elevations.
Instead of the standard stucco-embossed, the Hemmingways opted for a plain mill finish roof. There had been concerns that this smooth appearance would be prone to blemishes and marks, however the company claims that the design requirements were met without compromising the aesthetic.

Product of the month - Kalzip |
Developed to provide a simple and interesting solution to building design, the new Kalzip perforated fa?ade combines the strength of Kalzip with the design flexibility of a perforated solution.
Suited to both new build and refurbishment projects, it creates a 'veiled' effect, through which both natural light and air can penetrate. This perforated fa?ade acts as a sun shading solution and helps reduce wind loads. It also provides buildings with protection from vandalism and decay - particularly in harsh environments.
At night time, the use of lighting behind the perforated fa?ade adds an extra dimension to the building's envelope, providing the opportunity to creating striking designs using light through the semi-transparrent structure.

Cover for Norwich buses - Kalzip |
Designed by NPS Property Consultants, a Kalzip roof that spans 2200m has been applied to the new ?4.5 million Norwich Bus Station.
The roof structure is formed by two separate converging canopies clad with the company's 65/400 aluminium stucco embossed sheets supported by aluminium L25 and L190 clips. A range of the fabrications, including a steel liner sheet and a moisture-reducing vapour control layer, were also specified and installed by WWR for main contractor Bluestone.
At the centre of the 'plectrum' shaped canopy, translucent fabric panels have been used to allow natural light to penetrate and reach the main concourse below. The second canopy is separate and allows air to circulate to reduce fumes from buses. The canopy protects the glass fronted travel centre from solar heat gain, eliminating the need for additional air conditioning units.

New Welsh Assembly roof - Kalzip |
Some 3000m of Kalzip 50/429 sheets have been specified for the roof of the new National Assembly for Wales building. Utilising three dimensional computer aided design (CAD), the company demonstrated that the roof could be created using aluminium standing seam.
The use of CAD allowed the installers to determine the required size and quantity of the sheets. It also allowed for the sheets, all of which were in different sizes, to be continuously manufactured.
Its weathering and durability properties were suitable for the marine conditions of Cardiff Bay. The roof structure also features a range of the company's fabrications including curved flashings and welded bullnoses.
To reduce the building's overall energy consumption, the company's Insulation Plus 35 was specified to assist effective thermal performance.
