A thermally-broken vertical sliding window that is eminently flexible but compliant with the ventilation requirements of Document F has been launched by Kawneer. These thermal properties have been achieved by a polyamide break that is said to achieve optimum weather resistance and thermal efficiency.

Architectural aluminium systems supplier Kawneer is enhancing its professional service to specifiers and mains contractors with the launch of a dedicated architectural support team that will complement the company's network of architectural advisers, guiding customers through all stages of a project's design and development. Based at the company's head office in Runcorn, Cheshire, the team will answer enquiries from architects and main contractors, produce initial specifications for the architectural advisers to discuss with clients, and proactively review the customer's requirements. Team leader Gill Hensley (right), said: 'By working together, from initial concepts through to specification, we can help achieve the best and most cost effective solutions to projects of all sizes.'

Nearly the entire range of architectural aluminium systems from Kawneer is being installed on the landmark mixed-use Islington wharf in Manchester to meet essential requirements. These are - good thermal and acoustic performance and the movement inherent in the 21-storey tower.

A RIBA-approved CPD on the benefits of unitised curtain walling for off-site construction has been launched by architectural aluminium systems company Kawneer. It aims to advise architects and about the manufacturing process and testing regimes of unitised curtain walling, how they are different to traditional 'stick' curtain walling and how they are installed. Unitised curtain walling, which does not require scaffolding is said to be suitable for any site where access is difficult or restricted - a growing phenomenon with 70% of new-build now on brownfield sites.

Using a single sub-contractor - Kawneer- approved curtain walling installer Charles Henshaw - to build the facade of what is being described as a highly individual, if not unique ?13 million office building, is said to have led to efficiencies and fast-track construction for all involved. The building at the former BAe Systems' Lightning Park now stands on the renamed EHQ site near Edinburgh airport. The curtain walling was specified with a range of colourred aluminium infill panels together with rainscreen cladding, cassette panelling and 200mm-deep anodised aluminium face caps to give the building its three-dimensional articulated facade.

A fire-resistant version of the AA100 curtain walling system by Kawneer has been launched. The AA100 Firescreen has been tested to both UK and European fire standards by the Warrington Fire Research Centre to BS 476-22 using Pyrostop glass at 1.4 by 2.2m. It was certified fire resistant with 30 minutes integrity and 30 minutes insulation. Suitable for vertical applications including facetted walls, the dry-jointed Firescreen version removes the installers reliance on on-site sealing, and ensures performance in all weather conditions.

Curtain walling from Kawneer has been applied to the new Marine Operations Centre in Aberdeen. The external envelope is partly white reconstituted stone but the greater part is a bespoke glazed curtain wall which had to deliver 270? visibility. With a complex shape and wind factors, the curtain walling had to be flexible. A system that had never previously been used before in the UK was specified for the project, the AA110 system. It is similar to the AA100 range but with deeper glazing rebates, featuring 65mm deep transoms and mullions to the AA100's 50mm sections. Although the AA100 has slim sightslines, the AA110 is inherently more flexible. Modular glazing systems have a built-in flexibility which accommodates large building movements, but on this project only a bespoke 'stick' system could deliver the geometry of the facade.

Replacing windows in a listed building has been done with the use of Kawneer's aluminium systems. The new windows had to replicate the existing thin steel single-glazed ones with Kawneer's GT70 system specified to provide modern technical performance with the sightlines of original steel. Almost every window had to be fabricated individually as the large openings varied in height and width ? up to 50mm from one end of the building to the other. The disparity was allowed for in the window head and jambs so that all mullions and transoms remained the same. In addition, with potentially 28 panes of double-glazed glass in each window, the mullions ? up to five in each window ? had to be strengthened with new box sections.

A curtain walling system, with the appearance of a picture frame system, has been launched by Kawneer. The PF capped system can be used where the build characteristics of a typical semi-unitised picture frame system are not possible and where installation can be achieved in one stage rather than the two traditionally associated with picture frame systems. This new capped-only product gives the specifier a wider choice of design options while the contractor and installer are offered reduced installation times. The system has been developed to suite with the CWCT-tested AA100 and AA110 dry-jointed curtain walling systems. An external pressure plate, face cap and weatherseal allow for integration to the two existing systems.

Curtain walling by Kawneer has been supplied for the Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre as part of the development of the town's cultural quarter. The company's dry-jointed curtain walling, AA603 tilt slide and 190 narrow-styled doors, and AA 601 casement windows were specified for the project. Extra mullions were inserted to reduce the size of panels on the east elevation as the sub-contractors were concerned about the wind-loading. Due to the weight of some of the panles, - 250kg double-glazed - they had to be craned into place. The ventilation design allows for natural ventilation and mechanical displacement ventilation. Air distribution is via a raised slab that allows the soffit to be kept as exposed concrete. Night ventilation and solar glazing/brise soleil helps to reduce the cooling requirements.

Tests carried out by the BRE on Kawneer's AA 600 series of aluminium windows have confirmed they meet the requirements of BS 7950. The tests were carried out on the AA 601 and AA 603 tilturn windows to assure specifiers that they meet Secured by Design criteria. The windows were subjected to both manual intervention and loading. The former involved the use of tools such as screwdrivers and crowbars, while mechanical loading included a load on each locking point while another load attempts to push the vent open.

Curtain walling from Kawneer has been used at Bryant Homes' residential development in the regenerating Glasgow Harbour. Face capped and bull nose curtain walling, together with slope glazing, AA603 tilturn windows and AA603 tilt slide doors were used. The bull nose curtain walling was used on glazing boxes on the top three storeys of two apartment towers. Development at Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth has included Kawneer 1202 curtain walling, thermally enhanced windows and 190 doors. The school is a new build facility comprising of a two storey building. The installation required a complete fa?ade solution to include larger areas of cedar cladding in addition to the glazed aluminium products. The main constraint of the project was that it spanned across a valley, requiring a double width scaffold design for installation. Erected across the north and south elevations, and 130m in length, the outer scaffold incorporated ties and braces, whilst the inner scaffold provided obstruction-free access. A gloss finish was also provided with a minimum 60 micron paint finish and a marine environment guarantee providing long term protection from the coastal environment.

As part of the programme to develop products suited to the changing demands of building design, Kawneer has successfully tested its 190 and AA605 doors to the PAS 23 and 24 standards for security performance of single leaf external doors. The company's door systems have been proved by laboratory testing carried out at the Building Research Establishment. Security is perceived as a particularly important factor in both the commercial and the residential market, as research has shown that criminal damage and burglary can be reduced by designing security features into a building, the company claims. The newly tested 190 door meets light, medium and heavy use specifications and is suitable for internal and external doors. The AA605 door is suitable for light and medium duty requirements for low to medium frequency use.
