Thought to be the oldest Lido in the UK, Bristol Lido has been transformed into a model for energy efficiency by a restoration, which includes Thermomax solar thermal collectors from Kingspan Solar, providing up to 70 per cent of the heating for water on the site.
Thermomax is claimed to be one of the highest-performing solar collectors available, and is helping reduce energy bills as well as the CO2 emissions of the Lido.
The client specified 720 Thermomax HP200 vacuum tubes, which cover 80 m2 of the south-facing roof. Designed for Northern European climates, they are meant to be up to 30 per cent more effective than flat plate panels, claims Kingspan solar. The vacuum in the tubes provides optimum insulation but also suppresses heat loss, protecting the system from climatic conditions outside.
Owner of the Lido Arne Ringer, said he wanted to find a way to heat a vast amount of water without relying on expensive, carbon-based resources.
