Around 2500m? of granite-faced blocks for phase one of the MK Dons Stadium in Milton Keynes has been supplied by Lignacite.
The vision of the stadium has been driven by MK Dons' chairman who selected Lignacite's Midnight Granite range as the most appropriate medium for the stadium. The highly reflective finish is striking as well as being low-maintenance - an important point to consider on something the size of the stadium.
The granite faced blocks were the best choice to fit the vision of the architect and the client, said Oran McCloskey of Buckingham Group contracting, the main contractor on the project.
RoofBlock, a moulded concrete block.made by Lignacite, is claimed to solve the problem of maintaining fascias and soffits.
Installation is said to be much quicker and cheaper than a standard eaves fascia, with less brick cutting and wastage, Brickwork damage caused during the fixing of gable ladders is also said to be be eliminated.
With working at a height avoided after the building is finished and with CDM Regulations requiring specifiers to design out future maintenance where practicable, it is maintained that Roofblock can also help make a contribution to preventing accidents.
Special fixings are not required.
Sir Robert McAlpine specified over 36,500m? of Lignacite Original facing masonry for phase one of the Colchester Garrison redevelopment. The Original Cream facing masonry in split and weathered finishes was chosen to contrast and complement the brickwork on many of the buildings on the 185 hectare site. The project was finished 10 weeks ahead of schedule.
