Glass proves right fit at new facility

In an attempt to improve the safety and comfort of residents and staff at one of its newest mental health facilities, Mersey Care NHS Trust recently contracted Pilkington to install its Optifloat T and Optilam K.
The work was part of a ?10 million redevelopment at the Rathbone Hospital in Liverpool to incorporate the new facility, allowing the Trust to provide mental health services. The company's Insulight units were specified following extensive consultation with service users and staff. The units comprised 10mm Opitfloat T, 12mm cavity and 6.4mm Optilam K.
Tests showed the product would provide the required levels of safety and security needed for such an environment, where objects may be used by agitated residents. It is crucial that windows are as impenetrable as is possible, reducing the risk from breaking and shattered glass.
The new unit will be home to 40 patients with severe and enduring mental health problems in conditions of low security and who are on rehabilitation programmes.

Corridor's fire-proof wood

A 70m long corridor at the 220 million acre Galway Marine Institute now features 120m of Pilkington's Pyrostop. It was important that certain areas of the facility, such as those servicing the institute's scientific labs, have as much fire protection as possible. The facility is a 11,000m?, housing 54 labs among other things.
The Pyrostop was featured in a multi-pane timber screen, providing both the integrity requirements of a barrier to hot gasses, and flames. It complies with precise temperature criteria, defined in European and ISO tests.

Glass floor protection steps up a level

Providing an attractive solution to the increasing demands of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) order, Glazeguard has created the Triple-Lite Firefloor system incorporating Pilkington Pyrostop.
At 1m by 3m for a single panel, it is the largest fire-resistant floor that has been tested and approved to current British and new European standards. It offers both strength and durability and provides protection for over one hour for both integrity and insulation. This allows crucial time for the safe evacuation of people and prolongs protection to the building fabric.
As a single layer glass-to-glass butt-jointed system, the product is suitable for commercial glass floor applications. It provides all the qualities associated with glass, allowing light transmission and helping create brighter spaces, while offering the strength for a secure environment.
The system has been tested to withstand loads in excess of 8,000kg and temperatures exceeding 900?C.
Pilkington believes that the complete glass, frame and supporting system is the only glass floor available that can be specified for building emergency and fire exit routes, as well as pedestrian traffic.

Blue panels protect heritage

Some 50 glass panels, incorporating Pilkington Activ blue glass, have been lowered inro place on the roof of the Calne Heritage Centre in Wiltshire as part of its refurbishment.
The glass roof sections were replaced as part of the refurbishment and, in order to protect the sensitive exhibits in the building, included Pilkington Activ blue to act as a filter.
The glass also has a coating which breaks down organic dirt particles when exposed to daylight. These particles are then washed away by rainwater, effectively making the glass self cleaning.

Glazing climbs into a new space in Scotland

Structural glazing provided by Pilkington has been installed at the National Rock Climbing Centre in Edinburgh. A 3,600m climbing hall includes a central glazed atrium and 25m rock wall.
Some 1100m of the Pilkington Planar has been used on the structure's roof and three vertical screens, to create a transparent connection between the climbing hall and the surrounding landscape of rock faces, which were incorporated into the design to form the north and west walls of the climbing hall.
The laminated glass was specified for the roof and its supporting fins to provide enhanced safety for the public space below. Three 24m high vertical walls were specified as toughened and heat soaked glass. All structural glass was installed to a tolerance of +/- 5mm.

'A' rated window

Using Pilkington K Glass and Pilkington Optiwhite, Piper Double Glazing has created a window that is the first to achieve an 'A' rating from the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).
Piper succeeded by using a triple glazed sealed unit, with the outer and middle panes of 4mm Optiwhite low iron glass, and the inner pane of 4mm K Glass. The glazing has cavities of 16mm each, which are filled with argon gas. Window energy ratings enable the window company to use a label similar to that seen on white goods.

When it came to re-glazing over 30 windows at its Liverpool branch as part of a ?75,000 refurbishment project, Pilkington chose its Activ range which achieves a smart look with selfcleaning properties. The product has a dual-action coating that reacts with ultra-violet rays and rainwater, breaking down and disintergrating organic dirt. It is also hydrophilic, which means that when rainwater hits the surface it is spread evenly over the pane and as it runs off it takes dirt with it. The water on the glass dries off quickly without leaving drying spots.

Shining a light on Dublin's city quay

City Quay, a new five-storey office and retail complex on the banks of the River Liffey in Dublin's business district features a glass system that enables unhindered views across the river and city. The use of Pilkington Planar provides a flush glass surface using countersink holes and stainless steel fittings to fix back the glass fa?ade to the structure instead of the conventional framing systems. The result is a fully engineered system with the minimum of structure and the maximum visual clarity. Three different Planar glazing options were employed in the project. Two were single glazed systems and the third was in the ground floor retain area where the fa?ade was connected to 19mm glass fins.

Toughened glazing system will punch above its weight

Developed to enable architects to extend the design opportunities for structural glass, Pilkington and DuPont have collaborated to create a new tough frameless glazing system. The addition of DuPonts Sentry- Glas Plus structural interlayer to Pilkington Planar frameless structural glazing is intended to improve safety, security and durability. The Planar SentryGlas Plus system incorporates a laminated glass that has superior strength despite being thinner and lighter than other glazing solutions. Yorkdale shopping mall in Toronto is the first large scale project to use the system. A 60 ft. high, ?barrel vaulted? laminated glass atrium now runs 300 feet in length above the 180,000ft2 redeveloped area. The system was chosen for this project because it offered the aesthetic and functional needs with an unobtrusive framing system and strong glass.

A triple world first for glazing

Claimed to represent the world?s first triple glazed frameless structural glazing system, Pilkington has added to its Planar range with the Pilkington Planar Triple. With a multiple glass combination, the Planar Triple is designed as a move forward in terms of both improved thermal insulation and design flexibility. It also presents the possibility of improved solar performance and noise control. With a high acoustic performance and achievable U values of 0.8Wm²K, the system offers a solution to the demands placed on the fa?ade designer by the changes to Part L. The glazing system allows the incorporation of a wide range of glass types and support systems such as glass mullions, aluminium and steel purlins and rigging, without compromising thermal performance. It has been conceived to enable greater transparency in the building envelope, a style choice currently on the increase in public and private buildings alike, and removes the heat path that exists through conventionally framed systems, thereby reducing heat transfer.

Clean windows give clear view

Visitors to the Puijo Tower in Kuopio, Finland, can now get a clearer view of the landscape thanks to the recent installation of new windows featuring Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass. The 75m tall tower features an observation platform, a revolving restaurant, cafeteria and exhibition area. Triple-glazed units were fitted throughout the building, including around 160m
2 of the glass on the outside of the structure. As part of the complete refurbishment programme, the replacement windows were one of the important considerations. Whilst the outside of the old windows were designed to be cleaned from the inside, rigorous safety procedures had to be adhered to due to the height of the tower. Self-cleaning glass from the Activ range was suggested to minimise any cleaning difficulties in the future. Specially-made timber and aluminium triple-glazed units were provided. Inner panes are made from toughened laminated glass and feature solarcontrol film.
