No slip-ups in Dubai

The Dubai American Academy in the Al Barsha area of Dubai has recently installed Heronrib slip resistant matting from plastic extruders around its two swimming pool and in its changing-rooms. Heronrib was chosen because the Academy considered it the perfect slip-resistant safety and visually appealing solution for wet areas, says the firm. The matting also provides heat protection to bare feet, as temperatures can exceed 40 degrees celsius. The matting has a vinyl open grid construction with raised profile underbars which help water to drain away easily in all directions. According to the company, this construction ensures that the embossed surface remains relatively dry and highly slip resistant. The hardwearing matting is comfortable to stand on and has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal additives to ensure it is hygienic for bare feet. The product is normally supplied in 10 m roll format, reducing the number of seams.

Safe matting for roofs

Crossgrip safety matting from Plastic Extruders has been installed on the roofs of two buildings, the Heathrow/Windsor Marriott Hotel at Langley, and at Manchester Airport. At Manchester Airport the roof has been refurbished with Crossgrip matting to provide safe walkways used for maintenance. The matting's deeply etched open grid surface provides permanent slip resistance even in the worst weather conditions, says the firm. At the Windsor Marriott Hotel, the matting has been installed on top of solar-reflective stones and is strong enough to withstand the sharp edges.

A clean way into winter

Plastic Extruders has extended their entrance flooring range with the addition of the Frontrunner Brush Wide, an entrance matting which has been developed for heavy duty winter use, as a primary external barrier against heavy soiling. The Frontrunner Brush Wide extends the existing range of interior and exterior mattings in the Frontrunner Entrance Flooring System, which is designed to exclude dirt and provide safety underfoot at any entrance. The Frontrunner Brush Wide has extra wide gaps between the brushes to allow small stones to fall through and not remain on the surface. The debris is contained in the footwell and can easily be removed when cleaning. As the Frontrunner components are compatible with each other, Brush Wide can easily be exchanged for another Frontrunner matting in better weather. All of the Frontrunner range can be easily trimmed to fit, according to the manufacturer.

Fleximats EcoCoin, the flexible floorcovering from Plastic Extruders, has been used throughout Lightinc's impressive riverside showroom and offices near Tower Bridge in London. Lightinc is a new lighting design and supply company headed by James Wadsworth, a leading designer of creative lighting. The company needed to find a flexible floorcovering which could be loose-laid over the existing sub-floor to provide a clean-looking finish with a slip-resistant surface and which could withstand heavy use. New Matting for New York

One of the most prestigious leisure centres in the US, New York's Chelsea Piers Sports Entertainment Centre, chose Heronrib vinyl from plastic extruders for safety as well as hygiene around its swimming pool. Located on a 28-acre site next to the Hudson River, the centre receives 4 million visitors per year. The firm says that the client recognised the matting not only reduces slips but is comfortable to walk on and "very hygienic." Countering the cobbles

Frontrunner XT matting from Plastic Extruders has solved a tricky access problem at Folkestone’s University Centre, which is a joint venture between Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Greenwich, housed in the refurbished former Glassworks. The challenge for the centre was to provide safe access for students, particularly those with disabilities, entering across the old cobbled courtyard. This was also the designated emergency exit. Enlightening design

A new car showroom designed by MDG architects is being lit up by diffused daylight, transmitted through Kalwall translucent cladding from Plastic Extruders. The building is curved around the busy road that runs adjacent to the building. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare without the need for blinds or solar control. Even on cloudy days natural daylight is let in, reducing the need for artificial lighting, and also reduces energy costs thanks to its insulating properties. At night, the building emits an ethereal glow.

This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas. EcoCoin has environmentally-friendly credentials, because it is manufactured from 100 per cent 'post-industrial' recycled which is in turn recyclable. It is available in rolls up to 25 m long x 1.52 m wide, meaning 38 m2 is possible using one piece, reducing seams.

Absorber the Greek

Frontrunner Plus entrance flooring from Plastic Extruders has been installed in the main entrance to a new Greek hotel complex. The product was chosen thanks to its reputation in heavy foot traffic situations where problem-free and effective cleaning need to be combined with cost-effectiveness, reduced maintenance and smart looks. The product is manufactured with internal absorbent inserts within a "heel-proof" vinyl grid. This combination scrapes, cleans and dries the shoes while any dirt remaining falls through the grid. The entrance matting was trimmed from a roll on site, whereas other matting would require templating in advance and shipping large panels.

High and safe with Crossgrip

Large areas of Plastic Extruders' Crossgrip safety matting has been laid above one of London's fashionable squares. The matting was specified and installed as an ideal solution for creating safe access for ongoing maintenance of flat roofs and for gully walkways between pitched roofs.
