Production improvements

Production improvementsPolypipe Civils has announced a change to its structured-walled Ridgidrain and Ridgisewer pipe products. As part of the company's ongoing manufacturing improvements, the production of surface water and sewer pipes in diameters 750 and 900 mm will be transferred to the new Ridgistorm-XL manufacturing line. Ridgistorm-XL offers bespoke pipe profiles and individual stiffness classes for individual projects.

Large diameter in Durham

Large diameter in DurhamPolypipe Water Management Solutions (WMS), a leading manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage products, has worked closely with Northumbrian Water to supply its Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe system as part of a flood alleviation scheme. Working with consultant engineer Mott MacDonald and Seymour Civil Engineering, Polypipe WMS re-engineered the initial product specification for the combined sewerage network. 114 m of 1050 mm diameter Ridgistorm-XL were supplied for the scheme, alongside 1050 mm fabricated elbow joints, and two large-diameter 1800 mm manholes. The electro-fusion jointing method was a significant factor in winning the project, says the firm, as it eliminates the need for internal hot working. Bespoke fabrications and technical support from the firm also provide clear cost and time benefits. Seymour Civil Engineering said the speed of installation was a "clear benefit" of using Ridgistorm-XL.

Hybrid soakaway system

Hybrid soakaway systemA hybrid soakaway solution to manage surface run-off on the A3 improvement scheme in Surrey has utilised Polypipe Water Management Solutions' (WMS) Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra modular cells. Polypipe WMS supplied Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra cells to create four separate soakaway structures, as well as its Ridgidrain structured-wall drainage and cable protection products. The first two structures were installed on the project in November 2008. In-depth design work was carried out by Polypipe WMS on the third soakaway structure which used Polystorm cells installed in a circular, concrete-lined tank, to enable an installed depth of 6.5 m. A 1500 mm catchpit was used to divert the excess stormwater to the structure. The fourth structure used both Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra cells, with Polystorm Xtra cells used as the base layer.

WRc approval for Polypipe

WRc approval for PolypipePolypipe Civils has achieved WRc approval for its Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe system. All pipe profile options, stiffness classes up to SN8 and diameters from 750 to 2,100 mm are included within the certification. Ridgistorm-XL is manufactured as a value-engineered, bespoke product and as a result, Polypipe also received approval for its design software. Polypipe's pateneted electro-fusion jointing method is also covered by the WRc Approved Scheme for the tensile strength of each joint, the jointing method and Polypipe Civil's installation manual and guidance. The tests were carried out in accordance with BSEN 13476-1-2-3 standard, the new European standard for structured-wall pipes.

Wide load for the M27

Wide load for the M27Polypipe Civils has supplied £250k worth of drainage for the widening of the M27 motorway near Portsmouth. The project employed the firm's Ridgidrain and Ridgidrain Plus structured-wall drainage pipes, using diameters from 150-600 mm. Ridgidrain Plus includes an integral socket for faster installation, and was used on the busiest sections of the motorway to speed up the process. Concrete pipe was originally specified, but Polypipe Civils was able to break the specification, as its products could be installed quicker, an important consideration given that the motorway stayed open.

Changing the course

Changing the coursePolypipe Civils, a leading manufacturer of drainage, sewer, cable protection and water management solutions, has completed a challenging river diversion project in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Using its new large diameter pipe system, Ridgistorm-XL, which has a patented electro-fusion jointing process, Polypipe Civils' installation team was able to achieve quick and safe installation, says the firm. It installed 72 metres of the 1200 mm pipe along two separate runs, for the major land reclamation project. The scheme will reclaim 367 hectares of derelict land. The method comes with a guarantee of 100 per cent seal tightness from Polypipe, and is claimed to eliminate leakage and joint failure risks within the pipeline.

Hybrid drainage solution

Hybrid drainage solutionAs part of an extension to the production facility of casting specialist Williams Lee Ltd in Chesterfield, a hybrid sustainable drainage solution has been installed from Polypipe Civils in conjunction with Beighton Construction. Using its Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra modular cell systems, Polypipe Civils designed and supplied the hybrid structure to attenuate surface water run-off from hard standing areas. Over 1,900 cells were installed at the depth of two metres, with a 500 mm compacted sand and hardcore cover to the support the construction of a car park. Installation at this depth was made possible by the inclusion of Polystorm Xtra on top of the Polystorm cells. With a void ratio of 95 and 94 per cent, Polystorm and Polystorm Xtra both offer exceptional storage capacity in comparison to traditional methods of attenuation.
