Dispelling the myths about PVC

REHAU has produced a sustainability brochure designed to dispel the myths surrounding the manufacture, use and recycling of PVC in construction.
It sets out independent research finding from bodies as diverse as the BRE (Building Research Establishment), WRAP (Waste Research Action Programme) and various British government and EU studies to support the use of PVC as a safe, reliable, cost-effective, sustainable and recyclable material.
The company describes the brochure as an attempt to objectively counter the negative perceptions surrounding the use of PVC-U windows in the commercial and specification sector.
The brochure encourages specifiers to consider the 'Three Pillars of Sustainability' - social, economic and environmental - as laid out in the 1987 Brundtland Report 'Our Common Future.'

High value exchange rate

Meeting requirements for sustainable energy solutions, Rehau has launched a ground to air heat exchanger into the UK called the Awadukt Thermo.
The system consists of a network of polypropylene pipes that are laid around a building 2m below ground level and fed by a filtered air inlet column.
Instead of the building's ventilation system bringing air directly in from outside, it is drawn by a ventilation fan through the below ground pipe network. The air is pre-cooled in the summer and pre-warmed in the winter. The system achieves a Coefficient Of Performance of around 50.
The polypropylene pipe is designed to ensure an air tight barrier to the surrounding earth. The material has a patented formulation containing thermally conductive additives which optimise heat transfer and a silver based anti-microbial layer to prevent the growth of microbes on the inner surface of the pipe, ensuring air hygiene is maintained. This increases thermal conductivity by 45%.
