The Stour Centre in Ashford, which first opened its doors in 1975, has recently completed a major two-year refurbishment programme utilising over 1600m² of Rockfon's Sonar 'E' (Tegular) ceiling system. Trevor Culmer, of Integrated Interior Systems, said: 'There were a number of design and performance issues in the early stages of this contract which were all met using Rockfon Sonar tiles and RockLink grids. The lighting centres were not modular with the ceiling layout, this required the ceiling tiles and grid to be cut down to suit using specialist tools supplied by Rockfon. Purpose-made trims were also required at junctions between the ceilings and the curved perimeter bulkheads.'

A ?1.2 million spa extension at a hotel in Cardigan, West Wales has involved high performance Rockfon ceilings. The hexagonal hydro pool is the star attraction and it was crucial to the overall design that the ceiling not only looked good, with no visible grid and excellent light reflection but also offered humidity resistance and sound absorption. The dual effect ceiling was created using the company's Rockfon Sonar tiles directly above the pool and Alaska tiles in the surrounding area.

After a six month extension and refurbishment programme an impressive new showroom has been unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in Blackpool. Mirage (Ceilings & Partitioning) installed Rockfon's Pacific stone wool semi concealed (E15) ceiling system throughout. The system is said to be well known for its good aesthetics and ease of installation. Pacific has a light reflection of 83% and diffuses light in a way that make spaces bright and inviting to enter. It does not burn and can withstand more than 1000?C for longer than two hour without melting. The light tiles are claimed to be easier to cut and handle than wet felted mineral fibre ceiling products. They also offering improved acoustic benefits.

As part of a project lasting two years, Rockfon's ceiling tiles were installed throughout a new super hospital boasting a floor area of 1 million? feet. The PFI facility, known as Queen's Hospital in Romford, has the company's MediaCare & MediCare Ultra tiles, installed by Clark & Fenn Skanska. The tiles, combine 'attractive surfaces finishes with good acoustic performance according to the manufacturer. Such benefits are crucial in the healthcare environment where certain areas have to be under strict sound control. As many as 70km? of tiles were used on the wards, throughout the corridors, and in consulting rooms. Manufactured from stone wool, Medicare tiles resist moisture and bacteria without the need for chemical additives in their core, or surface treatment, in order to provide micro-organism resistance.

Classrooms and corridors at a high school have had Rockfon ceilings applied. The company's Sonar, Koral and RockLink Monolith grid systems have been applied. Koral is manufactured from stone wool and white surface and is available in a range of module dimensions. The ceilings can also withstand 1000?C for more than two hours.

For the ceilings of a hotel in Scotland, some 3000m of Rockfon Sonar Monolith, Lunar and Dekor have been installed. Sonar was specified for the arena, leisure facilities, and the spa area. In the 650-seat arena, the control of sound pollution was important in the specification. High sound absorption and acoustic control is offered from the Rockfon Sonar ceiling alongside non-hygroscopic properties. Additionally, as the arena is a public venue, safety from fire was required. The high density white matt painted ceiling is made from 100% stone wool which meets the legislation set down for fire resistance. Moisture resistance of up to 100% humidity is also achieved with the ceiling.

Recently installed at Chelsea Flower Show's Rockwool Garden Room is a Rockfon Sonar Ceiling System. With a glazed, curved elevation and insulated roof, the Garden room was the focal point of the 150m garden. The Sonar D Ceiling System is manufactured from 100% Rockwool stone wool with solid beech used to form a linear bandraster grid into which the 1800mm by 600mm tiles are integrated. This creates a monolithic ceiling with clean lines and the white painted surface offers a smooth matt finish. Thermal insulation is achieved by the Rockwool mineral wool with the resistance to heat transfer characteristics assisting energy efficiency. The requirements for sustainability are met as the product is recyclable and made from natural materials. Acoustically, the material's formulation counteracts the hard floors within the Garden Room.

Ceilings from Rockfon's Sonar range have been installed in a Saab showroom in Suffolk. The product has a white painted matt surface which gives a clean appearance, the company claims. It is a high density stone wool tile that combines a high standard of finish with performances in sound absorption, fire safety, and humidity resistance. Sonar Silence ceilings provide higher levels of sound attenuation due to a variety of factory applied acoustic backings.

Ceiling systems from Rockfon have been specified and installed to meet the dual requirements of acoustic and hygiene performance within the corridors and food technology classrooms of a secondary school. Specified for the corridors, Sonar is a high density stone wool tile that offers performance in terms of sound absorption, fire safety and humidity resistance. The product ensured that the corridors met the requirements for acoustics in schools laid down in AD.E and Building Bulletin 93. Installed in the classrooms was the company's Hygienic product, which, as with all of the company's stone wool ceiling tiles, does not contain any organic nutrients and therefore is not attacked by rot or fungi. The special white painted surface of the product incorporates an enhanced fungicide, which further resists the growth of bacteria.
