Split school sounds good

Poor acoustics had been making teaching two separate classes of young children in the same room in Brighton a challenging task. The solution lay with the use of an Ecophon suspended ceiling.
The exercise was carried out at Queen's Park Primary School in Brighton. Advantage A tiles were installed using one of the manufacturers grid systems, transforming the learning environment for both teachers and pupils.
The classroom had been entirely finished with hard surfaces apart from the carpet, which meant the sound was bouncing everywhere. Following the installation of the new ceiling, calculations showed that the reverberation time came down from over a second to 0.55 seconds.

Hanging out with the Edge

Complementing its suspended Focus systems, Ecophon has introduce a free-hanging edge systems. 'Edge' has been designed to provide a finished appearance to acoustic ceilings where wall-to-wall installation is not possible.
The character profile has detailing to produce a ceiling with a balanced appearance, thanks to a slope on the vertical profile. This enables outer edges to be angled upwards and downwards. The section and corner section is less than 0.1m high, while joint brackets for sections are integrated into the profile. The main sections are made from aluminium whilst the corners are cast in zinc.

Mood lighting

Downlights from Ecophon's new Dot range have been utilised at a school in the West Midlands. The luminaires have opal acrylic louvres and were installed with the company's Master E tiles. Designed as mood lighting, the 230 or 240V, 50 Hz luminaire can be specified with a HF electronic ballast or a dimmer version for digital control. It can be installed with Focus tiles and is demounted easily.

Overcoming vandalism

Overcoming problems of vandalism and poor lighting in a 1970's building, an Ecophon ceiling system has been installed at Telford Bus Station.
An arrangement of the company's Light Coffers alongside a Focus ceiling system has given the building architectural detail, as well as reduced noise and reverberation times and improved lighting.

Reducing noise reverberation

Acoustic ceilings from Ecophon have been installed in a Chichester hospital. The tiles were chosen to reduce noise reverberation and enhance working and patient care conditions.
The kitchen and catering room ceilings were fitted with Hygiene Protec tiles. They feature sound absorption and do not maintain moisture when washed.
Ceilings fitted to the treatment rooms have the Gedina E range and corridors feature Advantage E tiles. The restaurants utilised S line tiles with Focus E XL tiles forming a suspended ceiling with a recessed visible grid and tegular edge, giving a shadow effect. The Akutex T coating provides ease of cleaning and prevents dust from sticking to the tiles.

Constructing the right medicine

Built at Keele University, a new medical school has been constructed using a selection of products from Ecophon.
The new School of Medicine has been constructed by Pochin, with consultant Pick Everard being responsible for choosing Ecophon Focus D tiles for the majority of ceilings. The company's wall panels have also been employed to prevent problems with reverberation in the teaching spaces.
Products were used in the main lecture theatre to control acoustics, and along with the ceiling tiles were Wall Panels to the side and back walls of the area.
The main corridors within the 7000m school follow a shallow curve on plan. Installing a suspended ceiling was addressed by specifying extra wide panels which span the full corridor width.

Designed to offer greater energy efficiency and performance as well as flexibility in design, Ecophon has introduced a new range of Light Coffers. The fully integrated Light Coffers allow the design of ceiling details without extensive research and detailing, the company claims. The range also has the advantage of being designed to take the new T5 luminaire. New features of the range include slimmer and lighter aluminium profiles, cast corners producing precise features and a new matt surface finish.

Wall of sound absorption

In situations where sound absorbers cannot be mounted on the ceiling, as is the case for a room with roof windows or an atrium, Ecophon offers a sound absorbing Wall Panel. Manufactured from high density glass wool, Wall Panel can also be used in combination with a sound absorbing ceiling panel for total sound control. This is of particular use in classrooms, conference rooms or sports halls to reduce the risk of flutter echo.

Clouds on the horizon control noise

Nurseries are notoriously noisy but some degree of calm is being maintained at the Priory Nursery in Great Yarmouth thanks to Ecophon and some clouds on the horizon. The application of the company's Master Alpha acoustic panels includes a dozen 'cloud mobiles' suspended from the main ceiling. The first phase of the project featured Ecophon's Focus D system to create a dropped ceiling in each of the classrooms. In the second phase the creche was built using the Master Alpha panels suspended from the ceiling. Combined with a variety of pinboards and other softer finishes the company believes they will be effective in cutting out the reverberation.

Keeping sound down in school

School meal times are always likely to be noisy events, so the construction of a new dining hall and kitchen block at Uffculme School near Tiverton in Devon has been completed with acoustic panelling from Ecophon. The initial design for the dining hall included a hard wooden floor and bare walls with no sound absorption to deal with the acoustics. To deal with the potential problem of echoing knives and forks, as well as children?s voices, the company?s Master F acoustic ceiling panels were employed. The installation has worked well and Devon County Council has since used Master F in other demanding situations.

Concentrating on reverberation

Specified for their acoustic performance, appearance and robustness, products from the Ecophon range have been used in the construction of an award winning new school for the States of Jersey. The Grand Vaux Primary School in St Saviours, Jersey has gained a Highly Commended award in a local design competition and has been put forward for consideration for a Civic Trust award. Large quantities of Ecophon Focus E and Quadro 300 define the ceiling soffits and play a part in controlling reverberation time. This has been acknowledged as a problem in the teaching environment, where pupils can be distracted. The products have been used in the classrooms, stairways, and toilets as well as the main hall. In the large multi-purpose hall the Quadro products have broken up the shape of the ceiling as well as controlling acoustics.

In harmony with education

Three projects carried out in the westcountry, formulated under the Government?s initiative to devise new style teaching spaces, have made use of products manufactured by Ecophon. Under the leadership of Devon County Council?s Capital Strategy Team, the three separate ?Classrooms of the Future? have been built at Chumleigh Community College, Winkleigh School and Witheridge School. Not only were acoustic tiles installed on the ceiling, but Ecophon?s sound absorbing panels were used on the walls to help control reverberation. Within the Chumleigh Community College building, Master D panels are positioned on two adjacent walls while the opposite have been formed as folding sliding partitions. As well as dealing with layout and acoustic comfort, the design of the Devon classrooms also sought to address energy issues through both passive and green technology.
