Nearly 25,000 windows have been replaced with PVCu products designed to ensure they complied with legislation for the sizes of suitable egress windows to meet building regulations.

A growing trend for designing commercial buildings with larger windows has led to a rise in the demand for window hinges that can safely and securely support the weight of these larger windows and vents, according to one window hardware manufacturer. Securistyle said it was responding to this growing demand by 'enhancing its Defender Sterling self-balancing hinge' as part of its ongoing product development programme. The re-design of the hinge included the addition of a number of features that it says will help improve carrying capacity, weatherproofing, gust loading and endurance, offering 'high performance' and now a 'guaranteed 30,000 cycles'. The product is able to carry a casement sash 180kg vent safely, offering further flexibility to install bigger vents and windows. "Increased carrying capacity, innovation and sustainability are all essential to future commercial installations," commented Glyn Jones, sales and marketing manager at Securistyle.

Window hardware manufacturer Securistyle has launched what it claims to be the 'first domestic hinge on the market to support top hung windows of up to 150mm in height.' The 24" Defender hinge was developed in response to the demand for larger windows in domestic properties and public buildings. Also, changes in regulations regarding acoustics have led to glass becoming heavier, increasing the loads on hinges. The Defender hinge can support a maximum vent weight of 50kg.

As part of its commitment to meeting the requirements of the Decent Homes standard, Eastbourne Homes has specified Securistyle's full set of austenitic window hardware. The company's hinges, handles and its new Defender lock were chosen. Under its Partnership Pledge initiative, the company has worked with Radway, providing technical support on the correct choice and application of window hardware. All of the company's products are manufactured from austenitic stainless steel for resistance to corrosion, which is an important property for the climate of coastal towns. The project involved the replacement of existing timber and Crittal steel windows with pvc-u casement windows. Approximately 240 homes will benefit from the scheme.

Refurbishment by The Gateshead Housing Company has included the replacement of timber windows with double glazed upvc units including window hinges from Securistyle. The ?232 million programme will see 23000 homes in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, refurbished to meet the standards determined by the Government's Decent Homes Standard within four years. Allowing easier use for people with reduced dexterity, in accordance with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, Securistyle has launched the Virage handle. The non-latching handle enables the window to be opened without the use of a latch, reducing the risk of being trapped in a fire. It has been ergonomically designed for comfort and is available in offset espagnolette and cockspur, with a positive stop to ensure accurate in-line closure and in-line espagnolette for slimline profiles and non-handed options. The company's Parallel hinge system has been installed in the Grand Hyatt and and the Shangri-La hotels and the Stirling top hung heavy duty hinge sysytem has been fitted in the Fairmount Hotel as well as the Dubai Marina. Parallel opening windows are designed to provide natural ventilation by allowing a balanced air flow around the entire opening and can also form port of an automated solution for climate control. With rooms on the ground floor at street level, as well as rooms on four other floors, the hardware needed to be secure and safe. Each room has at least one large top hung window that has been fitted with the Defender hinge, with a restrictive device on the upper floors, and the Virage locking cockspur handle in silver to match the aluminium windows. Arcus has specified the full Vector Excluder security hardware package from Securistyle for Cobalt Housing. Cobalt Housing is in the process of installing new pvc-u windows in 400 properties in Liverpool?s Norris Green, Fazakerley and Croxteth areas. The Vector Excluder package comprises a new locking mechanism, window hinges and locking handle. The lock and hinges are manufactured from 300 series austenitic stainless steel for improved resistance to corrosion. The contract to manufacture and install the windows has been awarded to KEB Fabrications and Total Glass.
