Solar roofing reaches new development

Solar Century Solar roofing reaches new development Solarcentury's Complete SolarRoof system is being used at a new Barratt homes development near Northampton. The system consists of Solarcentury's C21e solar photovoltaic panels for electricity generation, and the company's C21t solar thermal tiles for water heating. Both are 'integrated tiles', replicating the appearance of traditional roof tiles and providing ease of installation. They replace four traditional tiles and are attached to roof battens in the conventional manner. A typical Complete Solar Roof can supply over 60 per cent of the hot water requirements for a three bedroom home, and generate 100kW of electricity a year per m². This can amount to 50 per cent of the electrical needs of a three bedroom household, with excess electricity being sold back to the grid.

School secures half price solar PV

Solar Century School secures half price solar PVA Sittingbourne, Kent school is believed the first to benefit from Solarcentury's Solar4Schools initiative under phase two of the Department for Trade & Industry's Low Carbon Building Programme . As a result of a £10,000 Dti grant Fulston Manor School has a 4kWp installation of Solarcentury's solar photovoltaic modules on its roof generating 3,300 kWh of electricity and is now said to be saving over two tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, for half the price it otherwise would have to pay . As part of the installation a monitor allows pupils, staff and visitors to see how much electricity is being generated as well as how much the system has generated in its lifetime and how much of a C0² saving this equates to.

Carbon savings at print house

Solar Century Carbon savings at print houseThe launch of the solar roof at the Print House in Dalston, East London, is the culmination of a collaboration between Solarcentury and London-based charitable development trust The Bootstrap Company. Saving over 12 tonnes of CO² each year, this is said to be one of the largest and most efficient solar installations of its kind in the UK. The Bootstrap Company is managed by the Environment Trust. It maintains and lets workspaces to local business at affordable and inclusive rates. As a listed building, one of the prime considerations in selecting a renewable power source to reduce running costs was the aesthetics. Solar photovoltaic roof tiles presented the solution, as they are virtually un-discernable from the ground. Jeremy Leggett, CEO of Solarcentury said: 'The work of the Bootstrap Company is vital in London’s tough business environment. Maintaining workspaces that are cost efficient and sustainable is the answer to creating and maintaining local employment in regenerating urban areas.” The solar installation is made up of 184 square metres of photovoltaic roof tiles. These will generate 21,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year whilst saving over 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is the most efficient solar PV technology available, operating at 20% efficiency. The installation will provide most of the electricity that the building’s occupants require.

Eden goes for solar solution

Solar Century Eden goes for solar solutionOne of the most sustainable buildings in the world, the Eden Project's education and research facility, The Core, incorporates solar panels from solarcentury. The building's architecture follows the Fibonacci series, a pattern at the heart of nature that generates, for example, the spirals in a snails shell. In order to integrate the photovoltaics into the buildings form the panels were faceted over a mounting structure constructed from a spiral of steel tubes. When viewed from above the panels spiral outward in a ring around the heart of the building, forming a shape of a flower with 11 individual petals. It is estimated the system will generate some 20,000kWh each year.

Solar tile scoops sustainability award

Solar Century Solar tile scoops sustainability awardWidely used by housebuilders, Solarcentury's C21e roof tile has been named Sustainability Innovation of the Year at the Building Sustainability Awards. The company received the award for its C21e solar electric tile, which it claims is the first solar roof tile designed specifically for UK homes. After winning the Interbuild New Product award last year the tile was upgraded and now features output of 52Wp per unit compared with its previous output of 40Wp. The second upgrade of the tile was commended for its darker finish, allowing it to blend with traditional roof tiles. Back mounted contact strips also provide a larger collector solar area, affording even more energy efficiency, while costs have been reduced through the use of a glass reenforced plastic frame.
