The refurbishment and conversion of a former care home into an apartment development in Buckinghamshire has features the inclusion of almost 300 steel windows - many of them complex frame shapes - supplied by a member of The Steel Window Association.
The challenging fenestration contract was carried out by north London-based Steel Window Service and Supplies.
The work involved the production and installation of 294 EB14 double-glazed windows in more than 130 different sizes and styles. Some 20% of the windows featured curved heads while three of the custom built windows were actually curved on plan to fit into an oak -framed radius opening. And while many of the frames were fixed into existing or replacement hardwood and soft timber frames, some of the windows had to be installed direct into stonework reveals.
In keeping with the Tudor-style of the property, all of the windows feature face applied patterned lead lights with the 14mm thick sealed units in weather stripped frames said to offer far better thermal performance than the singled glazed originals.
Within the range of steel windows available from Steel Window Association members are SMW and EB24 styles for residential properties and W20, W40, and hollow profile systems for public and commercial buildings.
All new steel windows are galvanised so they cannot rust and most are delivered to site with a factory applied paint finish.
Steel windows are recyclable and their durability ensures that they will have the life expectancy of the building.
Members of the Steel Window Association (SWA) will now be manufacturing windows that meet the Association of Chief Police Officers' 'Secured By Design' standard. The news comes after an initiative by the SWA to secure accreditation for W40 and EB24 steel windows. The police project was set up in 1989 to encourage housebuilders to incorporate effective crime prevention features in new homes. It has since been extended to cover all UK buildings.
A member of the Steel Window Association has completed a contract to fabricate and install bespoke double-glazed frames in a listed industrial building as part of its redevelopment.
Rea Metal Windows of Liverpool produced made to measure W40 frames featuring a special glazing bead which achieves the appearance of traditional putty glazed timber fenestration.
A total of 500 windows were manufactured for the project, finished in a grey polyester powder coat over the hot dip galvanised coating. Installed into timber sub-frames, each window comprises an 18 pane horizontal pivot beneath an 18 pane fixed light. The glazing solution meets Part L of the Building Regulations.
A member of the Steel Window Association has won a ?1 million contract to supply and fit replacement steel windows at buildings in Clapham.
Clements Windows' EB24 range were redesigned to meet the specification and now offer security standards to BS7950, weather performance to BS6375 and a u value of 1.8 W/m?K.
Designed for stainless steel thermally insulated doors as well as windows and fixed screens, Forster has launched the Unico profile system for members of the Steel Window Association. Offering insulation properties of 1.9W/m?K, it has no environmentally polluting synthetic materials.
Maintaining the seaside buildings light appearance, 70 year old fenestration on the De la Warr Pavilion at Bexhill-on-sea has been restored by a member of the Steel Window Association.
The De la Warr Pavilion was opened after a design competition in 1935 that stipulated the use of large steel framed windows. The member, West Leigh, was able to remove and renovate the ageing windows to ensure the architecture remains authentic.
The role was to remove the metal frame from the north and west staircases so that they could be shot-blasted and repaired. New sections were introduced where corrosion was too extensive. Frames were spray applied with a high performance paint system and reglazed with using a single leaf toughened glass.
Working with David Scott Architects, Steel Window Service and Supplies, a member of the Steel Window Association, has designed, fabricated, and finished a large internal room screen to divide the kitchen and living spaces of a Baker Street property.
The screen is 4.5m long and 2.3m high, with a pair of double doors. It was suggested that the exisiting windows were stripped back to bare metal and the surface lacquered for a sharp contrast with the white walls.
In this way the dark frames provided an industrial aesthetic to the interior and the steel was wiped over with a corrosion inhibitor for protection.
Bespoke W20 steel windows from the Steel Window Association member, Clement Steel Windows, have been supplied to a building in Kings Cross. The company replicated the building's old cast iron windows and provided the products glazed with soft coat low e glass. As well as being sympathetic to the period architecture of the listed building, the 14mm double glazed units with 6mm argon filled cavity offer insulation.
All members of the Steel Window Association are now able to offer the B195 Casement Handle, manufactured under the Smith Wallis brand by Basta. The new version features a single slot for a night vent and the modified screw hole positions match the B709 locking handle. It is manufactured in hot forged brass with a satin chrome or RTD finish.
Working as a package contractor for a construction company, Steel Window Association member Steel Window Service has carried out work on the development of the BBC's new Broadcasting House project.
The metal window specialist carried out stripping and polishing as well as the easing and adjustment of more than 500 steel casement windows.
On the Western House area of the project, the company provided a package of window replacement. Some fire rated units were installed because replacement windows in the lightwell are adjacent to an escape staircase, requiring a half hour fire rating to be implemented. Energy efficiency was upgraded in the fenestration by the employment of the company's silicone draught stripping system.
Steel windows for Building 48 of the historic Royal Arsenal in Woolwich have been supplied by Clements, a member of The Steel Window Association. The historical significance of the buildings mean that the Council had to approve the company's W20 windows. These were finished in a white semi-gloss with 14mm double glazed units providing the benefits of modern double glazing with traditional aesthetics.
Slim steel windows offer aesthetic appeal with durability, says the Steel Window Association. Galvanised windows are sealed against corrosion and will not rust, while polyester powder coated steel windows do not require redecoration for 15 to 20 years. Their inherent strength also offers additional security.
With the introduction of a purpose-designed locking mechanism, the has taken steps towards complying with the highest European standards on window security. The new lever handle activated system has been developed in cooperation between several of the SWA?s leading fabricator members and Basta parsons. Kits are based on nine different lengths of mild steel rail to suit the entire range of W40 steel windows from 600 to 2400mm high, together with night vent facility keeps.
One of the most visually striking properties in the Channel Islands has been refurbished with a member of the Steel Window Association undertaking the fenestration. The house on Jersey?s Atlantic coastline now features windows and French doors supplied by Steel Window Service using either W20 or SMW (Standard Metal Window) F series sections. All hardware was removed, renovated and satin chrome plated before being reinstalled on the new frames.
Secondary glazing systems from Steel Window Association member KMS Forster has been employed at a new commercial office complex designed by Foster and Partners. The new complex uses the Forster and Fuego Light System to achieve a 30 minute integrity and insulation fire rating with some new profiles specially designed and rolled for the project. Built by Sir Robert McAlpine, the 12 storey block at Number One London Wall was in close proximity to neighbouring buildings. Due to this a fire rated secondary glazing had to be integrated. Despite their slim sightline, the opening doors were strong enough to carry the large weight of the fire-insulated glass and still be swung back for cleaning purposes.
Steel Window Service, a member of the Steel Window Association, has replaced the ageing metal windows at the Peter Jones department store on Sloane Square, the first known example of steel curtain walling spanning floor to floor. While a large number of the windows were serviced in-situ, others had to be removed for the repair of corroded sections.
More than 250 windows have been supplied and installed at the former Harrods Depository building in Knightsbridge by West Leigh. The company fabricated the frames from steel W20 sections, featuring both fixed and vertically pivoting opening lights. While the majority of windows are rectangular and 2.5m tall, those on the lower level feature semi-circular heads.
Three new fire tests on its Fuego Light profile system have been completed, claims Steel Window Association member KMS Forster. These are said to offer the slimmest sightlines available on the markets, allowing the design of narrow fire-insulated profile widths with large glazed areas. The door was tested for 90min. integrity and insulation to EN1634 standards. In addition, a separate test has been completed on an anti-finger trap door, achieving a fire rating of 60min. integrity and 30min. insulation, it is claimed by the company.
