Light floods in if cloudy

Stoakes Systems Light floods in if cloudyBarge Arms at Gloucester Docks is a conversion into apartments where the architects have designed a low profile vaulted atrium in Kalwall. Supplied by Stoakes Sytems it was supplied because of its ability to distribute diffused daylight evenly. Unlike conventional glazing, it eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. Even on cloudy days, the interior is said to be flooded with natural daylight. High insulating Kalwall roof systems are available in self-supporting barrel and low profile vaults up to 7.4m span and self supporting ridge roofs up to six metres span. With appropriate supports, spans of up to 35m are possible. Unlike glass, the lightness of the panels mean erection is less costly and, even with a steel substructure, less cumbersome. The panels have inherent rigidity and impact resistance and are largely self cleaning.

Maximising daylight and maintaining dignity

Stoakes Systems Maximising daylight and maintaining dignityTranslucent cladding from the Kalwall range by Stoakes Systems has been used for the refurbishment of a local authority swimming pool in Letchworth. The cladding, on three sides between full height brick piers, replaces failing curtain walling. It was specified by the Estates Department of North Hertfordshire Leisure Centre because of its ability to distribute diffused daylight evenly, without shadows, glare and hotspots. Glare elimination means lifesavers can more easily monitor the water, and the lack of blinds and curtains means that the ingress of daylight is maximised, although privacy is still maintained. Energy saving is achieved due to the insulating properties of the product. This potentially reduces the running costs of heating, air conditioning and artificial light.
