A natural ventilation control system from Windowmaster has been specified for the Hadley Learning Community in Telford, a complex 30,000m building combining. The company supplied over 600 motors for the windows, as well as temperature sensors and manual override switches in rooms, all of which are linked to a central control system.
The system was developed to exploit the high thermal mass created by the building's structure to ventilate rooms naturally and maintain a comfortable, fresh internal environment. Will Pitt at Faber Maunsell said: 'We needed to comply with the latest government guidance on ventilation in schools as well as meet specific environmental criteria.'
Windowmaster has been chosen to provide window control systems for two academies scheduled to open in September. St Matthews Academy in London and Folkestone Academy selected the automated system which includes motors, window actuators, various sensors and a weather station. This monitors external conditions around buildings, including wind direction and speed, temperature and rain fall.
Both academies will have automated windows installed to naturally ventilate the buildings to prevent overheating and improve air quality for staff and pupils. Folkestone Academy will also have WindowMaster's anti-entrapment technology fitted to help prevent injury
A new school in Monmouthshire will have automated windows from Windowmaster installed to help it achieve a 'very good' BREEAM rating and natural ventilation. It will also incorporate the company's anti-entrapment system to prevent pupils from being injured as windows close. It uses a microprocessor to immediately reverses the motor to release the window.
