Jeld Wen UK Veneer doors get a revamp

The rising price of hardwood lippings has led Jeld-Wen to makeover its real wood veneered internal and paint grade veneer faced doors. The lippings along the long edges have been removed, which will allow US manufacturer Jeld-Wen to keep the doors at a competitive price, and eliminate the problem of shrinkage and expansion, which has sometimes resulted in hairline cracks appearing between the lipping and the door face. The absence of these cracks will result in a significant improvement in the overall appearance of the installed product. The changes bring the doors in line with much of the European and US door industry.

Stoakes Systems Ltd School has designs on daylight

Crestwood College in Hampshire is the latest school to install Kalwall translucent cladding. The cladding diffuses natural daylight into the upper part of the entrance to the multi-purpose sport, drama and fitness facility. Kalwall was specified because of its ability to distribute diffused daylight evenly. Unlike conventional glazing, it eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. Even on cloudy days, the interior is said to be flooded with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting.

Safetell Ltd CounterShield anti-attack system

Staff that face the public on a day to day basis could benefit from a CounterShield anti-attack system from Safetell that protects them from assault. The shield maintains customer interaction by the open screen, but staff keep control of the varying levels of protection they may need. Single or multiple side-by-side screens, with optional fixed panels, can be set at any partially open or closed position. The screen is controlled by push buttons for reactive high-speed closure, or up and down. A foot kick reactive activator is also available. Sensors stop the moving screen before contact with obstacles such as an arm Connected to a standard mains, the system's electric motor operates from a trickle charged battery and can also function for up to 20 operations in a power cut.

Bilco UK Ltd TER Floor Door

Home cellar company Spiral Cellars has chosen leading access doors and vents manufacturer Bilco to supply its TER floor door to wine cellars across the UK. Spiral Cellars install watertight cylindrical systems that are sunk into the ground allowing wine storage space of up to 1,600 bottles. The floor doors provided by Bilco are 898 x 1500mm in size and are designed with a pan cover to accept a variety of flooring materials up to 25 mm in thickness. This allows the cellar doors to be hidden in the floor and allows it to be placed in any room in the house. Simon Shand-Brown, sales and marketing manager at Bilco, said: 'A key distinguishing characteristic of a Bilco floor door is the way it operates. Each door is engineered to provide smooth, easy and controlled operation, even when filled with york stone or ceramic tiles'. Features that come as standard include a positive hold open arm that engages automatically when the door leaf is fully open, heavy duty hinges and a stainless steel slam lock with removable top-side handle They also feature anti-corrosion hardware. TER floor doors are constructed of 6.35 mm aluminium diamond pattern plate and built to withstand a 732 kg/m² live load.

Pilkington Architectural Window to secure hospital

What has been described as an extraordinary window solution for secure hospitals has been developed using Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass as a major component. The SafeVent Window was developed by fabricator BRITplas after being approached to develop a window that would provide an appropriate level of security whist retaining the appearance and general performance of conventional windows. The window has an in-line horizontal sliding action which allows up to 50% of the window area to open without the need to for hinges, locking points, levers or handles that may be used as ligature points. It is said to have an easy sliding action to allow use by frail patients while also preventing use as a ligature point. The SafeVent's open area is covered with a sheet of stainless steel punched with holes to make a mesh. Although it sounds austere it is claimed to be surpisingly discreet. The mesh prevents escape and the passing of contraband.
