British Gypsum Air force base ceiling boards are flying high

British Gypsum’s Gyptone acoustic ceiling boards have provided a major feature in a chapel renovation being submitted for a USAF international design award. The USAF 100th Air Refuelling Wing Chapel, a focal point of the RAF Mildenhall air base in Suffolk, has undergone a full interior renovation to include the new eye-catching Gyptone ceiling, which not only provides a much improved interior acoustic environment, but gives a modern, clean and bright appearance to welcome users. The 1200 X 2400mm Gyptone QUATTRO 41 boards feature a geometric pattern of full depth perforations which, combined with a special acoustic tissue backing, provide a very high level of sound absorption, satisfying Building Regulations Part E, Class C absorber standards. Contractor Graham Construction installed and jointed the Gyptone boards to give a monolithic ceiling lining that can be decorated in the future without affecting acoustic performance to maintain the pristine appearance of the ceiling. The ARW Chapel renovation is being submitted in the ‘Interior Design‘ section of the award scheme.

Pilkington Planar Glazed roof structure from Pilkington

St Stephen’s shopping and leisure complex in Hull features a glazed roof structure, created using the Pilkington Planar frameless structural glazing system. The undulating, wave-like roof covers a 250 metre long curved walkway, which is as wide as London’s Oxford Street. The glazing extends down vertically to form the east and west entrance facades of the centre, providing a striking and impressive welcome to shoppers. Pilkington glazing is also used for the outdoor covered walkways which surround the centre.

Keraflo ltd Aylesbury 'K' type float valves by Keraflo

Aylesbury 'K' type float valves, manufactured by Keraflo, have been specified by Aspire Defence for use across the entire Allenby/Connaught Project, the largest PFI accommodation and services project ever undertaken by the MoD. Building Products magazine understands that these will provide a reliable and efficient method of controlling the level of water stored in tanks at the various sites to be be upgraded. An initial order already has been fulfilled and, over the course of the 10 year build and refurbishment programme, the total number to be supplied is expected to be in the region of 600 valves.

Sound Reduction Systems Socket and Services boxes

Acoustic insulation experts Sound Reduction Systems have launched a new brochure in support of their Robust Detail compliant acoustic socket and service boxes. Fabricated from two layers of 10mm thick high density gypsum board, the sound insulating boxes are designed to ensure the acoustic integrity of any metal or timber framed separating walls that contain sockets and/or services. The boxes have been designed in Line with Robust Detail guidance, and are suitable for use with E-WT-1, E-WT-2, E-WS-1 and E-WS-2. However, the boxes can also be used in standard applications, where Robust Details are not required.

Springvale EPS Ltd Cost effective and fast way to create insulated suspended ground floors

With its Beamshield Plus product, Springvale has brought a cost-effective and fast way to create insulated suspended ground floors to the industry. Beamshield Plus is manufactured from high-strength EPS, and negates the need for concrete blocks, fitting between and below concrete T beams to provide both the total floor insulation and a formwork on which to lay the structural screed.

The new hall is a state-of-the art multi-purpose facility. The Comfort Zone system has been designed to integrate with the 4runner sprung flooring system - all contained in a 150mm void. Prefabricated swing beams, Comfort Zone pipework are all topped with cross beams.

The existing porch felt roofs had, over the years, deteriorated and were failing with leaks. Durapipe SuperFLO has been specified for a new air conditioning system at Audi's showroom in Manchester. The pipework system, which distributes chilled water as part of the showroom's air conditioning system, consists of 15m of 90mm Durapipe SuperFLO.

Arch Timber Protection Ltd First timber roofed railway

Overseas news: Building Products magazine has been told that Arch Timber Protection has treated over 200m3 of Oregon pine for the Bijlmer Arena, a new railway station in South East Amsterdam and the first in Holland to have a timber roof. It has been reported that the key to the use of the timber was its ability to deliver against a very demanding specification and the volume of timber made fire safety a critical issue. Another consideration was low maintenance.

Metal Technology Curtain walling for Tesco creates shoppers paradise

A curtain walling system by Metal Technology has been used to help draw shoppers into the new Tesco store in Lurgen, south of Lough Neagh. System 17, a single storey glazed facade was installed by fabricator Douglas Architectural. The project team was headed by architects Ostick & Williams and building contractors Patton Construction. System 17 was said to be idea following the store's normal format of long span, solar-protected glazing to bring as much light - but not heat - into the building. System 17 is specifically designed to give limitless flexibility to architects and is said to be suitable for both high and low rise facades. The narrow sight lines and robust design can be configured to suit the character and restrictions of many building styles.
