Lightweight roof systems specialist, Decra is taking another step with the launch of a steel tile that reflects the sun. A new coating on the company's Elegance tiles helps to prevent the sun's infra-red rays from being absorbed, reducing CO2 emissions and energy bills during the warmer months, by lessening the need for air conditioning. The non-toxic coating, which inhibits the growth of moss or algae, means that the tiles can also be used for rainwater harvesting.
The Decra Elegance tile is less than one-eighth the weight of traditional clay or concrete tiles and, say the manufacturers, it can be easily cut and bent on-site.
When a Leicestershire village cricket club commissioned a new clubhouse, the architect specified Decra roof tiles to withstand the occasional six.
Over 2,000 steel Stratos tiles were installed on the complex, curved roof of Kibworth Cricket Club in two thirds the time of more conventional tiles.
Bill Smedley, managing director of the architects for the project rg+p, said: 'One of the advantages of the Decra tiles is that they won't break if a cricket ball hits them. It will just bounce off. If we had wanted to use concrete or slate tiles we would have had to replace them
Faced with the problem of rust affected and peeling edges on the roof of a Fitness First sports complex in Bedford, the staff turned to Delvemade.
The Manchester-based company is described as an experts in caring for problematic and unfit roofs. The problem was diagnosed as a classic case of 'cut edge corrosion' affecting the horizontal lap joints and cut sheet ends of the 12 years old pvf2 coated steel roof cladding.
The building consultants specified Delvemade's Seamsil remedial treatment as the ideal long term solution. Once installed Seamsil is claimed to effectively eliminate any further deterioration of the sheet ends and laps for a guaranteed period of at least 10 years bringing peace of mind to the building owner.
The first of a number of bio-diverse roofs from Index has been completed on the Centre for Voluntary Action building, near a site where black redstart birds have previously thrived, in an attempt to boost the dwindling population. Indigenous species of wildlife were added within recycled aggregate on the roof to attract wildlife. The index waterproofing system comprises three purpose-specific bituminous membranes which were used on all exposed details, then a water retentive drainage mat was topped with

The launch by Fakro of its SLT Light Tunnel is said to be break new ground for the roof window maker. The product, however, complements the range by providing scope to bring natural light to windowless or dimly lit areas.
The light tube is available in 350 and 550mm diameter and three metres lengths. Its flexibility is claimed to keep installation time to a minimum.
Steel roofing and cladding supplier Arcelor UK sprang into action when a customer urgently needed to replace a roof on a storm damaged supermarket.
High winds ripped the aluminium sheet off the newly-completed store in Chester depositing it in the car park.
Following a Sunday morning telephone call to Arcelor's managing director the company confirmed it was able to supply the material without delay.
Arcelor supplied roofing contractor Blackwell Stanistreet with its Arclad R34 profiled steel sheeting to replace the lightweight aluminium which had been destroyed. The first sheet was supplied on Tuesday and both roofs were installed within just 12 days.

The owner of a Derbyshire-based roofing company is aiming to set up the UK's first dedicated PVC single ply roofing membrane recycling scheme having successfully trialled it with the help of a Recovinyl recycler.
Gordon Harris of Advanced Roofing, Ilkeston estimates that between one and 1.5% of PVC roofing materials up to a metre in size end up in landfill. An effective recycling scheme could divert much of this material from landfill to be reused.
