When Carillion and partner HLM Architects were looking for materials for 13 new build primary schools in Barnsley they knew they had to be robust, low maintenance and sustainable. At King's Oak, Kalzip's Falzinc raised seam roofing met all the criteria.
Falzinc uses a patented Pegal process to encase the aluminium core of the raised seam with a pre-weathered zinc layer that has a lower weather erosion rate than zinc and is long living due to the saline resistant substrate.
The weathering treatment gives the zinc surface a mid grey shading - the appearance of approximately three-year old natural zinc.
At King's Oak the sheets were fixed with associated flashings and fascias as well as gutters to prevent run off from cedar boarding above roof levels affecting the zinc.
Because cedar board rain run-off attacks the surface of zinc care was needed throughout construction and secret gutters were built to prevent future damage.
Pure Cladding is the name of the recently launched cladding design guide from Marley Eternit.
The guide focuses on the design, detailing and specification of the company's decorative rainscreen cladding systems.
Out goes the manufacturer's range of high performance building boards - they now have their own guide and in comes its range of fibre cement profiled sheets, plain tiles and slates to complement the cladding panels.
The guide is said to advise architects, specifiers and contractors on the applications for each of the decorative cladding options as well as technical data, colours and aesthetics. Help on how to avoid wastage is also given.

Barony Gate, a new housing development close to Glasgow city centre is combining traditional building skills with modern technology by using Alumasc render. The buildings were primarily finished in Alumasc's M.R.S5 dashing render, a tough, hard wearing and long-lasting traditional product that the manufacturer claims said to be ideally suited to developments of this type.
The developers chose to be bold and opted for Alumasc's Silkolitt special lightweight render in a bright shade of blue for a number of the panels. Silkolitt is a resin based coating with an attractive 'rolled' texture and high level water-repellent qualities combined with high water-vapour permeability.
This development in the Anniesland district is a new mixed housing project by local developer Mactaggart and Mickel. These developers turned to Alumasc, said to be a market leading exterior building specialist, to supply an external weatherproof coating capable of withstanding the extremes of the Scottish climate.
Alumasc maintains that these strongly contrasting panels provide a harmonious and visually pleasing continuity throughout the development, and that they appropriately bring a sense of sophistication and individuality to each of the buildings. Moreover, it claims, it results in a housing project of considerable architectural merit in a part of Glasgow that is seen as a desirable place to live.
Lafarge Plasterboard has supplied all the drylining requirements for the recently opened Jackson Square shopping centre extension in Bishops Stortford.
Conneely Drylining has installed Lafarge's Firecheck wall board throughout the 100,000 square foot retail mall, including the complex high ceiling. The mall features 8.5m high partitions which were constructed using the company's 146mm C Stud to achieve the necessary height and stability. These showcase telescopic deflection heads with fire umbrellas constructed on site to allow for the anticipated downward deflection.
The structural steel columns were fire protected using Lafarge's Cormet column and beam clip system. The system is simple to install and can provide up to 180 minutes fire protection.
The perforated range of façades from Kalzip has been extended to include two new shapes.
Originally launched with circular perforations, the range now incorporates façades with elliptical and cruciform perforations,
The façades can be used as lightweight solution to shading a building from the sun, and can also protect from wind damage. The aluminium itself is inherently resistant to corrosion and can stand up to the climate in coastal areas.
Available in four standing seam profiles, the façades can be concave or convex curved, and can be purchased in stucco embossing, patina or a colour coat finish.
Held later this month at Earls Court, 100% Detail will be the launch-pad for a range of fibre cement decorative rainscreen cladding panels from Marley Eternit. Instead of featuring the same colour throughout as the Natura Plus range does, the Natura range comprises nine colours available as a varnish on lightweight dark grey core and a further five varnish colours on a light grey core.

An addition to a landmark development in Liverpool has been combined with the claimed versatility and quality of Ash & Lacy's Ashtec rainscreen cladding system.
The company provided over 850m² of marine quality, anodised vertical rainscreen panels for the multi-storey car park at the Kings waterfront scheme. The car park combines Ashtec panels in staggered block layout, with a silver satin finish in keeping with the rest of the project.
Fibre cement cladding panels from Marley Eternit helped architects Nightingale Associates meet the brief tio provide a day surgery unit in the shortest time possible.
The lightweight Natura Plus through-coloured rainscreen panels in Anthracite were specified to clad, in an outsized planking effect, the whole of the 1,150m² site at Singleton hospital for Swansea NHS Trust.
Richard Golledge of Nightingale Associates said: 'Anthracite was used because the backdrop of the building had a band of trees on the site boundary and dark grey actually helps the building recede into this green backdrop.'
This approach, coupled with a partnering contract that brought the design team, contractor and client together at an early stage, ensured that the volumetric off-site units delivered and erected in just five days, with the whole project from inception to completion, took less than twelve months.
