Can colour affect performance? That is the question being posed by Crown Trade colour experts who are exploring the association of colour within football.
To coincide with the start of the English and Scottish Premier League campaigns they have looked at the colours that have been worn by the most successful, and least successful, teams in the post-war period.
In the English top flight red - sported by Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal - has been by far the most successful colour. Ironically, teams in gold came bottom of the colour league.
Red is considered an aggressive colour, explaining its popularity in football. However, despite its association with success Crown Trade does not advise its use unless specifically asked to do so.
