Multi-wall polycarbonate sheet filled with Cabot Nanogel has been used for a sports gymnasium in The Netherlands in order to allow natural light into the interior.
Nanogel is a light transmitting aerogel material that is lightweight with sound and energy insulating properties. The material is used as a filler in several types of multiwall plastic sheet products. It weighs 60-80 kg/m? and has light transmission rates of up to 32% can be achieved. U-value is 0.89 W/m?K at a thickness of 25mm.
The product does not attract water as it is hydrophobic, does not mould, and is weather resistant.
For this particular project, polycarbonate sheet was used with the multiwall sheets 2 by 2m with a thickness of 25mm.
Insulating panels of polycarbonate twin-wall sheet filled with Nanogel translucent aerogel from Cabot offer thermal and sound insulation and diffused light.
Installed between two layers of hardened Profilit profiled glass, they clad the walls on the front and rear of two upper storeys added to the Ibscherhaus in Munich.
The insulating panels reduce the u-value of 1.7 W/m?K to 1.25 W/m?K. Sound insulation has been improved by 4dB to 46dB and a light transparency of 30% with a solar energy transmission value of 53% is also achieved.
Aerogel weighs 70g per litre and consists of a network of nano-porous particles that has an air content of 97%, which prevents the flow of air.
