A new guide to central battery systems has been published by Cooper Lighting & Security, designed for those involved in specifying emergency lighting for medium or large installations. Central battery systems from Cooper Lighting and Security have been fitted to the University of Leeds to reduce maintenance costs in the running of emergency lighting. It was decided to use several Menvier CeaGuard CG48 central battery units with slave luminaries. Alan Hansell, the university's technical officer, said: 'With a central battery system battery life tends to be longer, sometimes 10 years or more, and when they do eventually need replacing, it's a quick job carried out at just one location.'

The new Crompton Lighting Tufflite range of linear fluorescent luminaires from Cooper Lighting and Security has been designed for use in applications where they may be subjected to wet or dusty conditions or even corrosive chemicals. There are two models in the range - Tufflite TFW and Tufflite TFC - and both feature a robust construction with a deep poured gasket seal for IP65 protection against dust and water ingress. The TFW is a general purpose, weatherproof luminaire with a flame retardant polycarbonate body, prismatic diffuser and clips. The vandal-resistant design makes it suitable for public areas such as swimming pools and car parks, as well as industrial applications. The polycarbonate-free TFC is said to be ideal for use where resistance to corrosive chemicals is required. Its body is made from glass-reinforced polyester, the diffuser from stippled acrylic, and stainless-steel clips are supplied. Both luminaires are available in eight different sizes to accommodate a variety of T8 or T5 lamps in either single or twin configurations, and the range also includes integral emergency versions.

Designed to provide unobtrusive emergency lighting in a range of applications, the flush-mounted JSB Micropoint recessed luminaire from Cooper Lighting has a diameter of just 30mm. The LED light source is claimed to offer a life of 60,000 hours and deliver uniform illumination, making it ideal for open areas. Available in maintained and non-maintained versions, Micropoint is slighly no larger than a 50p piece and its sizes enables it to combine its emergency lighting role with background lighting in outlets such as hotels, pubs and retail interiors. It is easy to install as its battery and control gear are housed in a remote pod with simple plug-in connectors.

Indication of emergency escape routes can be achieved with the new JSB Briteblade recessed exit sign from Cooper Lighting and Security. Using an 8W T5 fluorescent light source, the exit sign is compliant with the requirements of the EN1838 standard. With a metal body construction, the range includes a self-contained unit and five slave versions.

Providing a soft, uniform lighting effect, Cooper Lighting and Security has expanded its Crompton Lighting range with a new wall-mounting luminaire. Designed to complement the Waveform T5 collection of ceiling-mount fluorescent luminaires, the Waveform Wall features the same construction, using powder-coated sheet steel for both the body and the curved perforated panel. Equipped with a 55W TC-L compact fluorescent lamp and high frequency control gear, it measures 605mm by 210mm by 105mm.

Providing a self-test functionality, Cooper Lighting and Security has introduced a series of JSB fire detectors. The detectors trigger a visual alert and a signal to the fire panel, increasing safety levels by providing a warning of any malfunction. These uplighters provide effective illumination of ceilings and walls to enhance the visual environment in a wide variety of applications. Increasing its Crompton lighting range, Cooper Lighting has introduced the Waveform T5 surface luminaire. Designed for use with the latest T5 lamps, the new luminaire features a wing-profile reflector, designed to provide soft and even light distribution, illuminating the ceiling and vertical surfaces to create an improved visual environment. Suspended below the reflector is either a perforated diffuser for general illumination or a 65?-1500cd/m² satin-finish anodised aluminium louvre for use in VDT areas. Offering a simple method of speeding up the installation process as well as facilitating maintenance and any future reconfiguration, Cooper Lighting and Security has introduced a fast-fit luminaire wiring system. Known as the Connect Wiring System, the system uses GST four pole self-locking connectors which have a maximum current rating of 16A and can be plugged in or unplugged under load. Any part in the company?s Crompton Lighting range of modular recessed fluorescent luminaires can be specified with a panel mounted socket to make it compatible with the Connect Wiring System. Luminaries are linked together using a Connect Wiring System prefabricated lead kit, which consists of a T-connector and a 3m or 5mlow smoke zero halogen cable.
