Academic bookseller Blackwell UK has had its headquaters at Beaver House, Oxford, refurbished using Sika concrete repair mortars and specialist protective coatings. The company's MonoTop concrete repair and re-profiling mortar system was applied to re-establish the rib profiles of concrete panels on the 30 year old building, which was showing signs of deterioration. SikaGard 550W Elastic and Sika Ferrogard 903 corrosion inhibitor were also applied to give long term protection. Completing the refurbishment, Sikafloor Pronto was used to protect the loading bay decks.
High strength epoxy resin adhesive mortar and coatings from Sika have been used in strengthening work carried out on the cast iron Coalport Bridge. Sika-Dur 31 was chosen to bond steel plates to the bridge to improve its strength. It hardens without shrinkage and can bond to both cast iron and steel, as well as most substrates found in construction.
Repair mortars and coatings from Sika have been used extensively on the conservation and renovation of Isokon Flats in the London Borough of Camden. The Bauhaus style flats, of concrete construction, were erected in 1934. The concept was for an ultra modern, minimalist design, with compact self-contained flats. Some 70 years on the main concrete structure of the building was suffering from spalling and cracking, and required extensive repair and protection. All surfaces were blasted back to bare concrete, and defective areas were repaired using Sika Monotop 615, a high build concrete repair mortar. This cementitious cement based mortar has low shrinkage, no chloride admixtures and bonds well to properly prepared concrete. The repair mortar was followed by the application of two coats of Monotop 620 levelling mortar, to provide a smooth finish. Providing external protection from water ingress and carbonation, SikaGard 550W Elastic coatings were applied in the original salmon pink colour.
Leeds city council has chosen SikaWrap ? a carbon fibre fabric wrap system from Sika ? for Phase 2 of the refurbishment of the Matthew Murray Tunnel in Holbeck, Leeds. The reinforced concrete tunnel is 160m long and was built in 1974 as part of the dual carriageway A463. Over the years, attack from de-icing salts has contaminated the pier between the two carriageways, leading to corrosion of the steel reinforcement and spalling of the cover concrete. Following removal of any defective concrete, local repairs were completed using SikaCem 133 Gunite, a one part, dry spray micro repair concrete. Up to seven layers of SikaWrap carbon fibre fabric wrap were then bonded to the intermediate wall using the SikaDur range of epoxy resins. The fabric is designed to add strength to the wall, helping to contain the concrete and retain the integrity of the structure in the event of impact forces being applied.
Pegasus Tower, a communications structure in BT Adastral Park, Ipswich, has been externally refurbished using Sika materials. The uncoated concrete tower had originally been cast with low cover to the reinforcing steel, allowing water ingress and resulting in cracking and spalling of the concrete. To protect against further failures, stabilise the structure and reduce future repairs, Sika concrete repair systems and coatings were specified for the tower.
One of the largest Livery Halls in London, Plaisterers Hall has undergone a facelift. As part of the renovation Sika flooring materials were specified throughout the Great Hall. The existing concrete floor was levelled using 8mm of Sikafloor level 25, after application of the water-resisting system Sikatop 77, to accept carpet.
