£7.9m housing development begins in Newcastle

A new assisted living development in Newcastle has reached the highest point in the build, showcasing stunning views across the Tyne.

Contractor Tolent is on site building 54 high quality new homes on behalf of Newcastle City Council in the Scotswood area of the city.

The scheme includes 45 one and two bedroom apartments and nine two bedroom bungalows and will provide onsite care and support for older people who need help with day-to-day tasks.

Designed by Newcastle-based architects IDPartnership, the development will also include a restaurant that will be open to the public and will offer a range of activities aimed at creating a sense of community spirit.

Councillor Linda Hobson, Cabinet Member for housing at Newcastle City Council, said: “Providing a range of housing options to meet the needs of all our residents is a priority for the council, including accommodation for older people who need help with day to day activities to live independently.

“After some short delays as a result of COVID-19, it has been amazing to visit the site and see for myself the progress that has been made.  And I’m sure that, with the stunning views, fantastic facilities and onsite support available the residents who move into these new homes will feel they are right at the heart of the community.

Ian Avis, regional construction manager for Tolent, said: “It was great to be on site today and see first-hand the fantastic views that residents will be able to enjoy in their new homes.

“Our teams have worked tirelessly to progress this much needed housing development through a very challenging year and I’m delighted to say we’re now only months away from handing over the final scheme.

And with apprenticeships, training opportunities and children from local schools having the opportunity to learn about working in the construction industry, it’s clear to see that these new homes are already having a positive impact on the local area.
