Membership of the British Woodworking Federation's BWF-Certifire fire door and doorset scheme has gone from strength to strength, with membership increasing by 29% since the start of 2006. The scheme now includes 172 members. Prime Door Manufacturers, Corinthian Industries and Doorworks have become certified to manufacture fire doors, while six more companies have been confirmed as Licensed Converters.
Traditionally styled softwood windows, manufactured by British Woodworking Federation member George Barnsdale, have improved aesthetics at a retirement home in Poundbury, Dorset. Tall casement windows and shallow arched head windows were used to achieve the required proportions for the home's elevations. All were factory finished using a Sadolin micro-porous woodstain system in green.
External timber cladding and internal lining materials, both supplied by a member of the British Woodworking Federation, are performing at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Joinery Subcontractor SH Nicholson Joinery installed some 1200m² of cedar boarding, with the 150mm wide, tongue and groove matchboard secured to treat timber battens, fixed back to steel cladding rails. Inside, Formica faced panels line the walls to resist the impact damage of activities such as basketball. Higher up, or in areas not expected to suffer heavy usage, some 5,000m² of veneer panels and MDF was fitted.
Barnsdale, a member of the British Woodworking Federation, has supplied 120 timber windows, mainly weight and pulley type, for a period building in London?s West End. Single glazed windows with 12.8mm sound reducing glass were installed on the Picadilly and Old Park Lane elevations, with double glazed ?H? windows fitted to the rear.
New interiors, blending bespoke timber furniture with imaginative lighting, have been created by Pexhurst Services for Tetley?s headquarters in Greenford, Middlesex. The furniture was manufactured mainly from veneered mdf, finished either in oak or dark stained ash, while the front face of the main reception desk had a panel of bamboo set into it. The tea station features integral fridges and lighting while the tops were treated using a hardwearing lacquer to prevent staining. Pexhurst Services also fabricated the chairs and a pair of circular benches.
Effectiveness of fire doors has been demonstrated in the aftermath of a blaze at Trago Mills, a shopping village in Newton Abbot, Devon. The British Woodworking Federation points out that while the fire devastated one side of the fire doors, the other side remained unscathed. Such was the protection afforded by the fire doors, the 200 firefighters who battled to contain the blaze were able to save two-thirds of the building.
